Guru’s Are the Best for More Reasons than Just Knowledge

Don’t get used to the following, but really, I have to share this with you!
If you’re a Mozilla Firefox user (the best browser out there in my humble opinion) and you don’t use GetGlue yet, what are you thinking? Through Firefox (and some other browsers, not mentioning any names) you can customize your web browsing experience by selecting “add-ons” to fit your style. GetGlue is one of those add-ons.
So, what’s the big deal, right? Lets say you had the chance to have your best “cold-hard-truth” friend installed in your computer at all times (minus some of the really annoying whinny parts of course). You know, the friend who tells you the absolute honest truth about what you look good in and if you would really like the new hottest thing out there. These are the basics of GetGlue, it’s almost like having a personal shopper at your finger tips.
How it works…as you travel from site to site looking at all sorts of things (movies, books, actors, music, etc.) you have the opportunity to tell GetGlue if you like or dislike something just by clicking a button at the bottom of your screen. It also takes the recommendations of your friends (found when first setting up GetGlue) and then makes suggestions to you about what you may like to take a look at. So why not just ask your friends or read their websites? Do! I still do and there’s nothing better than a conversation to spark interest in a book I may have never tried before. But this is also something you can do on GetGlue, read all sorts of recommendations on a specific product and join in the conversation.
Another really fun thing about it is that you get free stuff for using GetGlue. The Turkeybird, he’s a sticker fiend! Crazy! Anything he can stick to a piece of paper or even his body he absolutely loves. As was demonstrated to me the other day when I found he had discovered the band-aids and covered himself from head-to-toe in them. Honestly, it was great! GetGlue gives you “stickers” for checking out all sorts of fun things on the internet. Boring right? Actually, I think I may be a bit addicted to the stickers just like The Turkeybird. I love getting them! And the neatest thing…I can order my “stickers”, free of charge, to be printed and sent to my home (for Turkeybird to then play with)!
Lastly, becoming a GURU is the most coveted of all on GetGlue, because it can lead to things like free movie tickets, albums and best of all…BOOKS! They’ve just begun doing weekly giveaways at GetGlue and already many people have walked away with some fabulous items. To learn more about how they work take a look at this blog entry. Basically everyday you have the opportunity to win something new. GetGlue focuses each giveaway on a new release and ties it to something currently out. So there’s a chance you could win that new book on your wish-list. All you have to do is be the Guru of a related item to be up for the drawing. Pretty neat!
I’m currently only the Guru of four items, but I plan on working on that. Hopefully it will lead to many more great recommendations to friends and possibly more to read, watch & listen to.
For the comments: What do you think? Do you have Glue already?
If you do, what do you think of the giveaways and being a Guru? If not, will you add it or won’t you?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
There’s A Book has no affiliate relationship with GetGlue.com we just really like their stuff!

I’m on Glue (as you know!) but I’m not nearly as sure what to do with is as you are. I am the guru of four things, but they seem so random and randomly selected that it is difficult to feel truly distinguished. However, it is a fun site/tool, and I often find myself losing much more time than I intended simply approving and disapproving of things. File it under: still experimenting.
Great post, BTW.

Thanks so much! I know what you mean about it feeling like random things you’re the Guru of. It seems that way to me sometimes as well. But the really neat thing is that I actually won something yesterday because of it! I was so excited! So, it really does help! And yes, I too spend a lot of extra time just clicking like and dislike.
ha-ha
I love the plasters story – very familiar. In fact that’s one sure way of keeping my kids happy for an hour – give them a packet of plasters and some cuddly animals and they’ll play quietly for a long time.

The funny things that keep kids entertained! It’s great!

Thanks for the remarkable writeup! It motivates us to continue to produce a great service by reading things like this.
As for the comment about becoming Guru and being a Guru of odd things – once you express your interest in an item (liking, commenting and replying) you are eligible to become the Guru. After that, the individual with the deepest level of interaction around the item is recognized as the Guru. Hope this helps!
