One of my favorite authors of all time hosts the Annual Drop Everything And Read Day each year on her birthday, today, April 12th. Beverly Cleary has long been an influential part of my reading past and I’m delighted to share her stories with my own children as they grow up. National D.E.A.R. Day is a special reading celebration to remind and encourage families to make reading together on a daily basis a family priority.
As part of the days initiative Cleary, along with a host of other organizations and companies encourage us to drop what we’re doing and read with our children/grandchildren/nieces/nephews/cousins…anyone. Just Read! The goal is to make reading a regular part of your routine.
So, go ahead and read today, tomorrow, and every day! Try to get in a least 30 minutes a day and see how big of an impact it has on the lives of those you love!
For more information about National Drop Everything And Read Day check out their website, you can even host a special event at your local school with the information they provide.
For the Comments: Who are you going to read with today?

Isn’t it amazing what a simple little thing like reading a bit when you’re young can translate into as an adult? Just incredible! Keep up the great reading!
My daughter and I read 30 Minutes of The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo to today to celebrate D.E.A.R. Day.
That sounds fabulous! I’ve wanted to read that book for so long now…you’ve inspired me though, I may just wait until my son is old enough to really appreciate it. Thanks for stopping by!
I absolutely love , love, love the idea of this day! (How is it that I am just now hearing about it though?) I will definitely find time to read at some point today (do blogs count…because I’ve been all over those so far…)…and thanks for sharing the news about this fun day of bookish love! Happy reading! ^_^
Isn’t it fabulous?! I’m starting to wonder the same thing about blog reading, because I spend A LOT of time with them as well! SO much fun though!

I think reading to children is such an underrated thing these days. It seems like a lot of parent’s would rather flop their kids in front of the TV babysitter than share a story with them.
I remember being read to as a young child to this day, but it’s easier to remember when my 6th grade teacher read our class The Sky is Falling and Looking At the Moon (both by Kit Pearson). After that I devoured a bunch of Pearson’s other novels. They stick with me to this day.
I’d love to read from her novels or The Tale Of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo to a cousin or niece/nephew the next time I’m around them.
The TV can be quite the distraction, some times a good thing, but you know what they say about too much of a good thing???
I have a similar story about my 5th grade teacher. He always read to us before lunch for at least a half an hour and some of those books remain my all time favorites. They just stick with you! Can’t wait to read that DiCamillo book! I’m seeing her in a couple of weeks at the LA Times Festival of Books and I can’t wait!
Our elementary school had “Triple R” time every day – everybody in the school from 1-1:30 had to READ READ READ! I loved it. Sometimes I didn’t have anything to read so I would grab the dictionary off the shelf and browse it. That would explain why I was using the word ‘pacify’ correctly in the 4th grade! Ha! Beverly Cleary is so dear to me, too. I was reading her to my daughter last night and I said, “I’ve waited all my life to share this author with you” and she said “And I will share it with my little girl”. That was a good moment.
Oh my! That is just an amazing moment! I can’t wait for those days! And what a wonderful school program, wish they still did things like that.
This is an event I had not heard of.. but I’m so glad for days like these!! Thanks for spotlighting it!
You are quite welcome! It’s such a fun event and a fabulous idea, just had to remind everyone.
I’ve never heard of DEAR day. Today I read picture books to my daughters and read to myself while nursing baby Jack.
