A Bit of Me(Me) – Your Favorite Smell

July 16th, 2010 by the1stdaughter

We all leave our “footprint” on the world, in one way or another. We each, individually, do something or are someone that makes the world a little better just by being here. I created this weekly meme to get to know the blogging community I love just a bit better. To know what makes them tick, outside of books, that is. Each week I will post a question to be answered in the following week’s “A Bit of Me(Me)”. Check back each Saturday to get the info for next week’s post and link up with your current post right here.

I know, some of you are skeptical about putting yourself out there on the internet and I completely respect that. That’s the entire reason I have no desire to ever reveal the “real” names of The Turkeybird and Littlebug. In time, once they’re old enough, if they chose to do that on their own I will respect their decision. So, if ever during the time I’m doing this meme do you feel the question is just too personal for your liking, feel free to post something else, I never want anyone to feel uncomfortable with what they share and I promise it will always be “kid-friendly”. I mean, this is a primarily children’s and young adult site, you know?

So, let’s get started!

This Weeks Question: What is your favorite smell and why? Does it bring back memories?

The Ocean

(Photo taken by my mom. You can find her Flickr Stream here and her site Earthbound Chronicles here.)

All growing up if my dad was ever to say, “let’s go for a drive!”, you could almost always count on a drive to the beach. Not every time did we bring all of our “gear” and head out to sea, but we always rolled the windows down just to take a deep breathe of the wonderful ocean air.

As an adult, who now lives within minutes of the beach, I still remember these “drives”. Often it included a stop at a 7-Eleven for a treat and it always included a little bit of mood music in the form of Van Halen, Winger, The Beatles or any number of rock bands my dad was in love with at the time.

Even now, I often hear of my parents jumping in the car to take a “drive-by” to the beach and stop in at their favorite local eatery (currently Con Pane, but often El Indio both in San Diego).

It’s definitely one of my favorite memories from my childhood and one I hope I will be able to pass on to my own children.

Now, your turn! Link up below and tell everyone “A Bit of You!”

Next Week’s Question: Tell everyone a bit about your very best quality or talent!
Have a question to add? I’d love some suggestions! Just leave them in the comments and I’ll see about adding them in as we go!

Also, feel free to grab either of the buttons for your own “A Bit of Me(Me)” post (or create your own), but make sure to link back to There’s A Book. (You can also resize these down to a smaller size if you’d like.)

  1. That is a great picture. I like the scents of vanilla, cinnamon, and real lilacs. The lilacs remind me of growing up – right where I am now. In full bloom you could smell them all over our yard. That always brings me back.

Ahhhh, one of my favorite smells too! A nice walk down memory lane. Those drives were always fun. And filled with music! I think dad would probably cringe at the Winger reference, but hey 80s bands pretty much all sounded the same ;o).

My favorite smell other than the ocean would have to be fresh baked chocolate chip cookies! Just the smell of them can lift my mood even on a hotter than hot day.

    I love this series!

    • LOL. Yes…Winger. :) Chocolate Chip cookies…Yum!

Thank you! I’m loving doing it, it’s been really fun to get to know everyone else and spend some time running down memory lane.

The beach is my second favorite smell! The scent, the clean air, the power of Mother Nature, I always find it invigorating.

    • Coffee always reminds me of my grandfather when I was little. My immediate family doesn’t drink it (and I still am not a huge fan of the taste), but oh how I love that smell and everything it reminds me of! Great choices!

The ocean is a wonderful smell for sure, but it isn’t one that I remember from my childhood. I grew up near the Great Lakes, so I’m used to the smell of freshwater beaches, which is really not the same thing at all. In fact, while I’ve been near an ocean (The Atlantic and The Pacific) a few times now, I’ve only ever swam in it once when I was about 12.

The picture is beautiful by the way.

    • Thank you! My mom is a great photographer, at least…I think so. ;)

I know what you mean though about the difference in the smells and it is quite different. And as for swimming in lakes…I’m completely terrified of it! Definitely a phobia!

  6. I totally love the ocean, too, and the sea breezes remind me of family vacations. We took two trips a year, when I was a kid. One was to the ocean and the other to Yosemite, which is a beautiful national park here in California. I loved both places, but the ocean was my favorite.

But I wrote about something else, which you can find here:

    • Isn’t it funny how just a simple smell can bring back so many memories? I’m sure when you think of those trips it reminds of more than just the ocean air our beautiful parks, but your family and the driving and so much more. Thanks for sharing that!

I do love the smell of the ocean. We started going to the beach yearly when I was about 6. The closest beach to us is about 5 hours away, but the one we always went to was closer to 7 hours. Anyway, when we knew we were getting close, we would all roll down our windows and start sniffing frantically, just waiting for that first magical scent that signaled the real start of our vacation.

    • Thank you, I just always love the images my mom captures, she has a great eye!

How fun! I love hearing about these great trips and memories from everyone! I can just imagine you all in the back of the car with your faces half way out the window and the wind in your hair.

I love the smell of the ocean too. Since I’ve never lived by one, the smell is all about being on vacation! I love it!

  10. Loren says:

So happy to meet you and to join in on this wonderful meme!

    Have a blessed weekend

  11. Ooh, I’m jealous you are so close to the ocean! I admit I haven’t spent enough time on a beach to even be entirely sure of its smell. I’m a mountain kinda girl, I guess :)

  13. You know, I can envision what the ocean probably smells like, but if I’m being honest, I don’t think I’ve ever smelled it. I grew up in Utah, and now live in Colorado, both landlocked states. My parents were never big on vacations to a coastal area. I’ve been to Orlando several times, but I dunno if you can really smell the ocean from there. I kind of feel like I’m missing out now!

I picked two for mine – roses and bread. I swear I am awful at picking just one thing!

    • Ahhh! That’s so sad! You have to get to the beach some time, because it’s a smell you just don’t forget. Besides it’s so calming…you’ll just love it!

Definitely can’t go wrong with roses and bread…wonderful smells!
