BOB Books: Sight WordsKindergarten and First Grade
by Lynn Maslen Kertell and Illustrated by Sue Hendra

Published by Scholastic

Publishers Summary: From the #1 bestselling learn-to-read program come two brand-new sets focused on learning and practicing Sight Words.
Sight Words are words that are recognized by sight rather than sounded out, in order to achieve reading fluency. They are the most frequently used words in the English language, and are often unable to be read phonetically (“was”, “are”, and “out” are examples).  Bob Books Sight Words feature the top Sight Words in two sets – one for kindergarten and one for first grade – in order to allow parents and children to read, learn, and practice easily and enjoyably. Each Sight Words box includes 10 original books, 30 flashcards, and a parent guide.  Soon your child will be saying “I read the whole book!”®

BOB Books are practically a household name when it comes to teaching little ones how to read. Their simple, straight forward and adorable stories are exactly what small hands and eyes need to grasp the beginnings of reading. Just take a look at some of the adorable pages in the new Sight Words series:

For myself,  BOB Books were some of those books I actually looked at before I had children. You know the ones? You’re in the book store getting ready to pick out your first books for your little one, or even as a gift for someone else…these always made the list. I wanted to share each and every one of them with my kiddos from the earliest possible age, just so that I could pass on that love of reading that I have to them. So far though, I’ve had to be creative with my use of BOB Books.

As many of you know, The Turkeybird has a form of Autism called Hyperlexia that enabled him, at a very young age, to begin reading. So, in some ways, BOB Books were not going to work in the “traditional” way because The Turkeybird could tell words just by seeing them on a page, by sight or memory if you will. Well, the problem we’ve run into recently is that he’s not putting the letters together to make words and his association with items on a page isn’t doing so well either. Fortunately, these books are just perfect for him. He can recognize the words already, but they are simple enough that we can spend time focusing on the letters that make up the words and relating them to the items in the book and in “real life”. They’ve already begun to help tremendously!

BOB Books, specifically the new Sight Words series, is an invaluable resource for anyone needing help teaching beginning readers. Little ones will love the adventures that Mat and his friends take and parents will love the simplicity. I’m certainly enjoying using them to help our sweet Turkeybird and can’t wait to start with my Littlebug, who is already loving the flash cards include in the set!

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 3 and up. Perfect for beginning readers and even with children who may struggle with word and letter association.
