Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten? by Audrey Vernick and Illustrated by Daniel Jennewein

Published by Blazer and Bray (An Imprint of Harper Collins Children’s)

Pages: 32

Ages: 4 to 8

Publishers Summary: Your buffalo is growing up. He plays with friends. He shares his toys. He’s smart! But is he ready for kindergarten? (And is kindergarten ready for him?)

Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten? is a hilarious look at first-day-of-school jitters from author Audrey Vernick and illustrator Daniel Jennewein.

The Turkeybird Speaks: “It’s so hard to go to a new place with new people sometimes. I’m a pretty shy guy myself and until you get me to start running around I usually like to keep to myself. So, the Buffalo in this book and me would get along great! I especially loved his backpack, you should take a look at it in the picture below.

“Someday soon I know I’m going to be heading off to school and there will be lots of other kids who won’t know me and I won’t know them. But if I can be anything like the Buffalo, I know I’ll do great! His paintings were so awesome! And I know all the other kids will love to hang out while we read together, since it’s definitely my favorite part besides being outside of course. I did think the part where he ate the flowers and the grass was a little funny, but I guess that’s just because he’s a buffalo!

“The Buffalo really got me excited to go to school soon, I just wish I didn’t have to wait another year. But still this was a great book and I loved all the fun things he did with all the other kids. I also loved his tower of blocks, so cool! You will definitely have to read this one if you know someone starting school soon, they’ll love it!”

Mom’s Two Cents: “We can all remember that first day of school. Maybe not the very first day, but I know I remember my first day of middle school, high school and a variety of other schools (because we moved a little bit). It was exciting, fun, scary and overwhelming all at the same time. There are parts that are easy for some and parts that are so difficult we’d almost just skip school altogether so that we could avoid them. Now, imagine all those things…and then, imagine you’re a buffalo! It’s kind of like the two ton elephant in the room who manages to break everything in site and could possibly make the entire experience miserable for everyone including himself. But maybe not.

Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten? is truly about all of us starting out those first few, sometimes frightening, days of school. From a young age we begin to crave acceptance, at least on some level, and a desire to ‘fit-in’ somewhere. The buffalo is just like each of us, he has his quirks, his difficulties and challenges, but on the inside he’s still a great guy looking to make a few really great friends. Throughout his journey in the book he discovers (as do his classmates) that we are all a little different, that sometimes we need to be patient and often we need to understand that everyone is good at their very own unique thing. We all have a place.

“In addition to being an amazing book that will prepare kids everywhere for those first few trepidatious days of school it also has some amazing illustrations. What I absolutely loved about the artwork was what I call the ‘crayon’ affect. Each item on the page was outlined in black and looked like it had been drawn with a crayon (it might have been, I just don’t know). It’s so unique and catches the eye of children so easily. Not to mention the part about personally loving the buffalo!

“Overall, Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten? is the perfect book for that kiddo (or yourself) who’s starting school soon. Maybe it’s been awhile and you are heading back and need a bit of a nudge to get back into things. Or possibly this is your oldest child’s first time heading to school. Whatever the situation, this is a great book to help ease into that transition and get excited about what lies ahead!”

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 3/4 and up. Depending on when your little one is starting their adventure into school/preschool this is the perfect book!

Fantastic review! This sounds like another book our shelves need. Tomorrow is the first day of 5th grade and Kindergarten for my oldest kiddos. My 5 year old attended pre-k last year so she’s a veteran 🙂 We’re debating signing up my 3 year old for preschool. She wants to go, but I’m not ready to let her LOL

    • Ahhh…I can completely understand! My little guy may be heading to pre-k this year and I’m so torn. I know it will be good for us both, but it’s hard to believe it’s already here!

You’d definitely enjoy this book, as would your kiddos! Perfect for your age group of kiddos!
