Pages: 348

Ages: Young Adult

Release Date: TODAY! (Aug. 16, 2010)

Publishers Summary: Life seems to have it in for Franny Flanders.
Her best friends aren’t speaking, her parents just divorced, and her hippie grandmother has moved in.
The only karma Franny’s got is bad karma.
Then Franny gets her hands on a box of magic recipes that could fix all of her problems. It could even change the world! Finally, life is looking up.
But Franny is about to learn that magic and karma aren’t to be played with. When you mess with the universe, it can bite back in unexpected ways.
Ouch!

Mini-Review (Full review to come):
Franny has it bad. She’s stuck in the middle of everything; her parents, her friends, groups at school, her choices and now it seems she’s messed up the balance of the universe in her efforts to make things a little easier on herself. With the help of a magic box, her Granny and a few magical “recipes” Franny manages to get exactly what her karma has in store for her. Unfortunately for her, Karma Bites, and without the help of other-worldly forces, things may be out of balance for good!

Have you been bitten recently? If not, then this is just the book to get you back in the swing of things. Franny is exactly what I remember myself being like during my middle school years. You’re torn between friends, places, choices and sometimes all you want is for a magic wand (or in this case, a box) to make things all better. Karma Bites was hilarious, from magic gone wrong to random appearances by Heidi Klum, J.K.Rowling, and Justin Timberlake the story never stops. You definitely don’t want to miss this debut novel and I know I personally can’t wait to read more!

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 8 and up. This is a book for every age group, from 8 to 80. You’ll take a trip down memory lane and laugh all the way to the last pages.

Please make sure to take a look at my post from yesterday, Karma Doesn’t Bite for Book Bloggers, to help There’s A Book make it into Stacy and Valerie’s next book!

A Huge Release Party Contest

Karma Bites. So, How Do You Get Bitten?

Throughout the story Franny’s magic box delivers recipe after recipe for things like Sensationally Sexy Smoothies to Blissful Buddhist Bracelets. Each designed to “solve” some difficult situation Franny has encountered and each involves a special instruction like this:

After bracelet is complete, follow with a tree pose by bending right leg and placing foot firmly at top of inner left thigh. Put both arms in the air, clasp hands, intertwine fingers. Hold for one minute, focusing on desired outcome. Keep bracelet on for two weeks. (p.75, Karma Bites ARC)

There’s even one to fix a minor hair mishap just before school starts. So, when I read the book, I knew I had to try a few of the “recipes” out myself. The favorite so far (because we’re still trying them all out) was the recipe for Brassbound Beatitudinous Blondies, which instructions included the requirement of standing on your head to produce the right outcome. As you can tell, the only one willing to have photographic evidence revealed was the Turkeybird, who loved every minute of it, including the product of his labors:

So, how does this apply to the contest and how do you win? The details:

  • Create and submit a recipe for an “magical” item. This could be something you already make everyday or for special occasions. It can also be a non-food item. Maybe you know how to make soap or can weave bracelets like Franny’s Granny in the book.
  • Give Your Recipe a Unique Name. All of the recipes in the book have fun names like Sensationally Sexy Smoothies, Blissful Buddhist Bracelets or Brassbound Beatitudinous Blondies. Come up with an original name for your recipe. It may be something you make all the time, give it a new spin!
  • A Magical Step. Each recipe needs to have that extra magical step. Something like: Stand on your head while baking, repeating a chant before finishing (make sure to include those words!), or dance a jig while the blender is going. Be creative and have fun!

That’s it! Submit your recipe using the form below and on Wednesday September 7th, 2010 the winning recipe will be announced on both my site as well as the Karma Bites Book site. The submissions will be judged and winners selected by non-other than the authors of Karma Bites, Stacy Kramer and Valerie Thomas!
The contest is open to US/Canadian residents and must submissions will be open until Friday September 3rd, 2010 at midnight EST.
