There's A Book

We all leave our “footprint” on the world, in one way or another. We each, individually, do something or are someone that makes the world a little better just by being here. I created this weekly meme to get to know the blogging community I love just a bit better. To know what makes them tick, outside of books, that is. Each week I will post a question to be answered in the following week’s “A Bit of Me(Me)”. Check back each Saturday to get the info for next week’s post and link up with your current post right here.

I know, some of you are skeptical about putting yourself out there on the internet and I completely respect that. That’s the entire reason I have no desire to ever reveal the “real” names of The Turkeybird and Littlebug. In time, once they’re old enough, if they chose to do that on their own I will respect their decision. So, if ever during the time I’m doing this meme do you feel the question is just too personal for your liking, feel free to post something else, I never want anyone to feel uncomfortable with what they share and I promise it will always be “kid-friendly”. I mean, this is a primarily children’s and young adult site, you know?

So, let’s get started!

This Weeks Question: Do you have any other hobbies(not necessarily talents) besides reading? (Brought to us by Gwen from Chew and Digest Books)

Now, lets be honest here, I have two very small children, an attorney for a husband, a crazy busy blog, reviewing for another site (Chick Lit Reviews), I’m active in my church and numerous other odd bits I pick up here and there. So, I’m sure you’re wondering how in the world I could fit in anything else? Well, I do, when I’m not incredibly insane.

Well, most of you already know I’m a musical person. So for a lot of you it will come as no shock to hear I play the flute and have now for close to 25 years. I’ve played in groups from orchestras to jazz bands to flute choirs as well as playing as a soloist in different venues. It’s something I find incredibly rewarding and extremely fulfilling. It’s also something that I hope I can pass on to my children in some form, either by singing or playing an instrument. Music is something I think everyone should have in their lives.

My other hobby would be writing. In fact two weekends ago I attended a writing workshop with author Catherine Ryan Hyde and 6 other writers that changed everything about how I write and read. It was amazing! But I’ll talk a little more about that tomorrow in my Sunday post.

So, when I’m not going crazy with all the other things on my plate I like to pretend I’m a bit of a storyteller and write mostly middle grade and young adult fiction. We’ll see if it ever goes anywhere. I’d love for it to (as would my husband), but I’m not counting on it. For now it’s just something I love doing when I have the time.

Now, your turn! Link up below and tell everyone “A Bit of You!”

Next Week’s Question: Who is a famous person (dead or alive) that you most admire? And why?

Have a question to add? I’d love some suggestions! Just leave them in the comments and I’ll see about adding them in as we go!

Also, feel free to grab either of the buttons for your own “A Bit of Me(Me)” post (or create your own), but make sure to link back to There’s A Book. (You can also resize these down to a smaller size if you’d like.)

  1. I took piano lessons as a child and hated it. But now, at my age, I wish I knew how to play.

I wish I had more time for writing, too. Someday!

  3. I took piano, accordion, and clarinet lessons as a kid…the piano lasted longest.

I can’t wait to hear more about the writing workshop! You know, I realized as I was writing up my post, that I had it pretty good and was probably being unfair by asking the question. I don’t have little kids and work from home, so I have a lot of free time to fill. On the other hand, I am so glad that you are taking some major time to write and chase your dreams:)

    • Nah, you weren’t unfair at all! That’s just life sometimes and I’m sure there are times that are crazy for you, even without little ones running around.

And thanks! Chasing the things I love is what keeps me going some days. It gets hard on little sleep and cranky kids some days, but it’s so nice to have something of my own to look forward to, if only for a few minutes a day. 🙂

  5. Besides reading, blogging, and internet surfing? 🙂

    Traveling, photography, and antiquing 🙂

  6. I thought I commented but it disappeared 🙂

    Music and writing?
    I can see that.
    You’re way creative 🙂

    Photography, traveling, and antiquing.

  7. Awesome! I’d love to read something you write – here’s hoping you get it published someday. I put writing as one of my things today too, but I’m no where near publication.

  8. Gina says:

Wonderful to see more of your talents that are hiding just below the surface emerging….and much congrats on continuing the work on your writing! Perhaps one day we’ll be reading YOUR published work for our sites…. ^_^ Happy reading!

  9. Suey says:

I played the clarinet once upon a time. In fact, I did it for three years in the college marching band (BYU that is!) One of the best things I ever did. But, I don’t think I’ve played it since! Sad, huh. Very cool that you’ve kept it up!

  10. I’m so jealous that you can play the flute! I wish I had some musical talent in me, I just seem to lack it. I would love to be able to play the violin or something like that. Instead, I settle for just listening to beautiful music.

I, like many people, had some piano lessons as a kid, but I hated it. It came so easy for one of my sisters, but not for me. I always wanted to be out playing football and basketball with the boys instead, lol.
