Sticky Burr: Adventures in Burrwood Forest by John Lechner

Published by Candlewick Press

Pages: 56

Ages: 6-10

Publishers Summary: Welcome to Burrwood Forest, where a village of seed pods leads a busy life gathering food, building stick houses, and having extraordinary adventures. There are good friends like Sticky Burr and Mossy Burr, who stick together, and bad seeds like Scurvy Burr, who likes to irritate them every chance he gets. Watch out for wild dogs and maze trees, loyal insects and escapes on the fly in a gently quirky, delightfully detailed graphic storybook that middle-graders and ambitious younger readers are bound to get stuck on. Meet

Sticky Burr, his unshakable friends, and his prickly foes! A beguiling graphic storybook guaranteed to grab young readers.

“Before I go any further with the review, I must share with you the reason for my picking up this delightful series. A few weeks ago I was on Twitter when the Candlewick Press team tweeted the Theme Song for this very unique book. Take a look and see why I had to play it multiple times for the Turkeybird:
(*warning* If there are children present, they may want to watch it over and over and over again! That’s okay, though.)

“Fantastic, right? It was an instant hit and within minutes I was ordering my very own copy to have here at home. Yes, we absolutely love book trailers for children’s books. They sometimes will make an otherwise so-so picture book stand out as a favorite for both the Turkeybird and Littlebug. Besides that, I kind of fell in love with the fact that there are NO book jackets on these wonderful, fully illustrated, hardback books. Just brilliant! Now, on to the actual review…

“Sticky Burr is a little different from the rest of the burrs in his group. He’s artistic, he loves to paint and play the ukulele, and doesn’t enjoy the typical burr activities of getting stuck to everything in sight. Unfortunately for Sticky Burr there’s a bully who wants to see him thrown out of their group because he’s a little different, but thankfully he has a few friends there to help him out. With his friends in the Burrwood Forest Stickyburr embarks on an adventure that takes him to mysterious places, meeting royalty and eventually leading him back home where he belongs.

“One of the best parts about Sticky Burr is the dialogue. Yes, it’s set up in a comic book format and because of the format it’s incredibly easy to read. But it’s also the banter and quick one line comments made by random burrs throughout the story that make you chuckle. There are also more heartfelt moments that allow even young readers to appreciate their unique abilities just a little bit more. Besides the dialogue, I also thoroughly enjoyed the artwork. It’s amazing to me that someone could take something as simple as a burr and turn it into an entire series with likable qualities, but Lechner has. Take a look at this bit of interior art from the publisher for an example:

Sticky Burr: Adventures in Burrwood Forest was just what I expected after seeing the Theme Song. A humorous adventure that boys and girls everywhere will fall in love with. Sticky Burr is a character with heart and hope, he’s never afraid to go out on his own and try something new. It’s a lesson for young and old, but told in a most unique way. I have absolutely adored this series of books and hope to add more to my collection as time goes on.”

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 5 and up. A story about striking out on your and following your own path, one that will resonate with young (and old) readers everywhere.
