There's A Book

Alpha Oops! H is for Halloween by Alethea Kontis and Illustrated by Bob Kolar

Published by Candlewick Press

Pages: 40

Ages: 4-8

Publishers Summary: Ack! It’s time for the show, and A isn’t ready. But then again, Halloween can only start with one letter, no matter how the A-B-Cs normally go! The misbehaving alphabet is back, and there’s no telling who will take the stage next. Z for zombie? P for pirate? Will X think of something good in time? Neon-bright, comically detailed illustrations show a cacophony of costumed letters, each with a mind and personality all its own. Along the bottom, tiny pumpkins arrange the players in proper order, making this alphabet story letter-perfect for Halloween. H gets top billing — but a stubborn B has something scary to say — as the inside-out alphabet gives a howl-arious Halloween performance.

The Turkeybird Speaks: “Happy Halloween! Did you know I just went trick-or-treating for the very first time? It was great! I wouldn’t let my mom and dad leave until my pumpkin was all the way full. I can’t wait to eat all the chocolate I got, but I may have to sneak a piece or two since my mom says I can’t eat it all right away. How could that be bad? Chocolate is wonderful!

“Okay, so enough about my chocolate addiction…I love this book! I mean really! Of course it’s all about Halloween, which is the best thing ever besides Santa. And then…it’s all about the alphabet! How cool is that?! It’s so funny that it doesn’t start on A, because that’s normally where my mom and dad make me start, but I like this a lot better. Every one of the letters is something spooky from Halloween, but so so funny! My favorite part has to be the big surprise at the end, BOO! Poor letter B doesn’t find a word to go with until the very very end, but when he does you’ll be falling off your chair laughing.

“This is the best Halloween book ever! And the cool part about it is that because it’s all about the alphabet I think I can talk mom and dad into reading it even after Halloween. You should really read this book, very soon!”

Mom’s Two Cents:A isn’t ready to start the alphabet off this time around and so H steps in to start this spectacular Halloween Alphabet parade. There are zombies, imps, ravens and even a kraken to poke fun at this sometimes frightening holiday season. Mixed up and dressed up this alphabet celebrates this spooky time of year in a comedic way that will have children and parents alike laughing from beginning to end.

“When you search and search for alphabet books that make learning fun, it can be exhausting and often you end up with just likable books. For a child to really enjoy a ‘learning’ type book, especially those dealing with numbers and letters, they really need to stand out, they need to get a child involved with the text and loving reading it. I’ve found that in the recent past I’ve been somewhat picky when it comes to children’s books I love for this reason. Of course a lot of my opinion may be skewed by my own children’s opinions of the books we read. The Alpha Oops series of books is without a doubt an exception to the average run-of-the-mill alphabet book and it’s one that will have your kiddos involved with the story to the very last page.

“In Alpha Oops! H is for Halloween you greet a colorful and exciting group of letters. If this is your first encounter with these particular letters, no problem…by the end you will know each quite well and be anxious to pick them up again. Each of the letters plays a different character and manages to incorporate themselves into numerous pages throughout the book, not only their own. They laugh and goof around, making each and every reader giggle with each turn of the page. I’m with the Turkeybird on his choice for favorite, the letter B, but not for his finale but his continual random pop-ups throughout the book as a Buccaneer and Bigfoot. In addition to the letter B, there’s also a handy alphabet at the bottom of the page that gets added to as the story goes along to create the formal alphabet we all know and then can share with the child you’re reading with.

“By far, a superior alphabet book! Not only perfect for the Halloween season, but anytime of year that you are interested in reading with a child you love. In addition to the delightfully chuckle-worthy story the illustrations are quirky and brilliant, capturing the eyes of all who read it. Blending learning with fun and beauty this is book not to miss. Alpha Oops! H is for Halloween is an alphabet book every child should have on their bookshelves, helping to create a love of reading from the very beginning.”

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 2 and up. Brilliant illustrations, silly story and a creative take on a sometimes boring alphabet will have readers of all ages learning and giggling all the way to the end.
