There's A Book

Z is for Zombie by Merrily Kutner and Illustrated by John Manders

Published by Albert Whitman and Company

Ages:  6-9

Pages: 32

Publishers Summary: Children looking for goosebumps and chills will get them in this A to Z just right for Halloween or anytime. Rich, spooky paintings help set the stage for a frightfully good time.

Things that go bump in the night, from A to Z. Watch out for the Bogeyman and don’t forget to wear your turtlenecks because Dracula may just get you. There are Eyeballs, an Imp and a Mummy. Don’t forget the Queen, or you too may loose your head! Skeletons that poke and prod, Vipers that lash out and of course…ZOMBIES!

From page one to the very end Merrily Kutner takes you on an adventure through all the spooky things that creep during the night hours. Accompanied by the fantastic illustrations by John Manders, this is an alphabet book not to be missed! Each letter and illustration is accompanied by the brilliant rhyming of Merrily Kutner. Some of my favorite letters were G for ghost, Q for Queen, and S for skeleton:

Ghost: “An eerie figure haunts the stair.
“You peek again – but no one’s there.”

Queen: “You see the Queen, but where’s her head?
“She holds it in her hands instead!”

Skeleton: “Skeletons rattle ’round your bed –
“bony fingers poke your head!”

No doubt this book is not for the faint of heart, but it will certainly entertain. If reading with younger children who frighten easily you may want to wait until they’re old enough to understand the text and appreciate the humor behind the pages. We’re holding off showing the Turkeybird because he’s still a bit young, but his dad and I have been enjoying it in the meantime.

Z is for Zombie is the perfect addition to any library where Halloween and all it encompasses is appreciated. Merrily Kutner’s storytelling combined with the eerily stunning illustrations of John Manders is the perfect book for this creepy and often spooky time of year.

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 8 and up. For those of all ages that love things that go bump in the night this is the perfect addition to their library. Not for the faint of heart, if you’re easily frightened be mindful to read it during the daylight hours and with an appreciation for it’s humor.

The picture on the right is actually Merrily and myself at the Orange County Children’s Book Festival. This was actually the second time I’d been able to chat with the lovely Merrily, the first time was at the Central Coast Writer’s Conference a few weeks ago. She’s fabulous and her books are just as wonderful as she is!
