Snow Day! by Lester L. Laminack and Illustrated by Adam Gustavson

Publishers Summary: When the television weatherman predicts a big snowfall, the narrator gleefully imagines the fun-filled possibilities of an unscheduled holiday from school. Piling under warm blankets. Sipping hot chocolate in snowman mugs. Building a snow fort. Sledding in the neighbor’s field. In scene after snowy scene, from sunrise to sundown, a pair of siblings, with their father in tow, show how they would make the most of their day off.

But when the family wakes up the next morning, they are in for a disappointment. No snow! As the family members pile into the car so they won’t be late for school, an unexpected twist reveals who wanted the snow day most of all.

Adam Gustavson’s expressive illustrations comically capture the excitement of pure possibility in author Lester Laminack’s thoroughly original tale.

The Turkeybird Speaks: Snow! Oh man! I think I remember this stuff from when we lived in Virginia when my dad was in school. It was so neat, but really cold! My favorite part though was that on really cold days my mom would make me hot chocolate. So good! That would be a good enough reason for me to want a snow day. We don’t get snow here though, but maybe one day we’ll go somewhere again that has it.

This was such a fun book! It helped me remember all the fun things about the snow. Even if I remember there is a picture of me with my face in the snow when I was really little. That didn’t look like much fun, but I don’t remember it at all. I’d still love to make snow angels again, it sounds like so much fun! Definitely take a look at this book, it’s great!

No Turkeybird's were harmed during this photograph. Dad was right there to pick him up! Mom's just quicker with the camera.

Mom’s Two Cents: A snow day! What are the chances? For a little family hoping for a day inside sipping hot cocoa or outside making snow angels, the weather man’s report of snow is just what they were hoping for. To sit all day reading a book or watching TV and catching up with family sounds delightful to everyone including the dad.

This was such a fun read! We don’t get snow anymore, now that we are back on the West Coast near the beach. It’s practically 75 degrees year round here, and don’t get me wrong that’s wonderful, but the season changes are one of the things I miss most about being back East. To have a day inside to sit by the picture window snuggled under a warm blanket with a warm drink and a good book while the snow falls, so wonderful! That’s exactly what the characters in Snow Day! are hoping for. Hopefully one day we’ll get to experience it again and I know the Turkeybird will just love it!

An adorable book with a funny twist at the end that children, parent, teachers and librarians alike will love. Snow Day! is perfect for the coming chilly weather months. With beautiful illustrations and a wonderful story this is a family you’d bring along on your own snow day. Laminack’s writing is also wonderful, perfectly in sync making the words fall off the page. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone with little ones, even those without their fair share of “snow days.”

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 3 to 9. The perfect book paired with hot chocolate, a snugly blanket and a thick layer of snow outside. Children and adults alike will fall in love with Snow Day!

A snow day? SQUEE! Can I have one too? Can I can I can I? *looks outside* Oh, wait…me thinks I’m too far South for that. *SIGH* Sounds like a great little book and perfect for the winter season. I can see many a young one (and those young at heart) getting into the joy and whimsy of a snow day. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Awesome.
Loved the photo and loved the caption about “no turkeybirds being harmed”.
    FAB post!
    I’m still smiling.

  3. Looking forward to snow days here in Ohio! The picture was great too – I have one of my daughter but i wasn’t fast enough. I photographed the aftermath – red face and tears!

I love it! That photo is priceless…unfortunately we rarely get snow down here in South Carolina but I grew up in a military family so I have lived in both Maine and Alaska…definitely seen some snow in my childhood! Hoping for maybe one snow day this year for Little Man. Last year it snowed right before his birthday in February. Here’s to hoping for a snow day. They are the best!

  5. This sounds like a cute book! Love your pictures :)
