The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff was a seriously fantastic read! I had the opportunity to review it not to long ago and when I was approached with the chance to interview Tate, one of the main characters in the book I jumped at the chance. As a bit of background about Tate for those of you who have mistakenly not read The Replacement yet…
Tate happens to be Mackie’s crush; Mackie being the main character. She’s just a typical girl in a very abnormal town called Gentry where the underworld characters of nightmares switch normal babies for unnatural creatures, replacements. Unfortunately for Tate her baby sister falls victim to this ongoing tradition and she’s left with no one to turn to except for Mackie, who himself happens to be a replacement. His ties to the underworld of Gentry are the only thing that can possibly save Tate’s little sister and restore some sense of normality to her world. Now, the interview…
Q. You were one of the first people outside of Mackie’s family to recognize his “uniqueness”. Was there something in particular that caught your attention or was it just a general feeling?
A. Okay, I know that life in Gentry is all about not seeing what’s right in front of you, but come on—Mackie is completely strange. So yeah, maybe it was more a feeling than anything, but I didn’t have to tell him that. The best way to get the truth out of someone is to let them think you know exactly what they’re up to.
Q. Tate, your sister wasn’t the first to go missing in the town…why did you feel so strongly that it was possible to get her back?
A. Well, at first I wasn’t sure, but I knew that something was definitely wrong. Then, once I figured out a little more about the situation in Gentry, I didn’t know if I could get her back but I had to try. Just—when you know that something really bad is happening around you, you can’t just sit there.
Q. Was there ever a point when you really thought Mackie wouldn’t or could not go through with helping you?
A. Seriously? Uh, that would be pretty much every day. I mean, he’s not exactly the most confidence-inspiring person. But when it came to finding out what happened to Natalie, there wasn’t really anyone else who could help. You have to take what you can get.
Q. Do you feel like you have a future with Mackie, now that you really know where he’s from and why?
A. Future is a funny word—it could mean a lot of different things. I don’t think our chances of staying together are any worse than any other couple in high school. I mean, some of the girls in my grade have a new boyfriend every other week, and that’s not us. Yeah, he’s kind of weird, but I’m weird too. We do all right.
Q. Last, because we talk about children’s books and you are so in love with your little sister. Which book would you read to her before she goes to bed at night?
A. That’s easy—The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman. She really loves the pictures and is completely crazy about that pig puppet.
Thank you so much to Tate for a great interview and to Brenna Yovanoff for a fantastic novel! I’d highly recommend picking it up if you haven’t already!

I listened to the audio version of The Replacement and absolutely adored it. Loved you character interview too. I need to incorporate this into my book projects with my students. I already have used the Show me Five, Character to Character, and Book to Movie with them so this will be a terrific addtion too.
That was awesome. I <3 character interviews.
Aren’t character interviews fun? I’ve done one previously and you never quite know what will happen. This one…so much fun and add to that the unique giveaway, another fantastic post. Great job Danielle!
What a creative idea for an interview! Based on the above comments, I guess this is a pretty standard thing… But it’s new too me, I think! I like it. And now I really want to read The Replacement!
