There's A Book

The 20 Question Interview with our very own Turkeybird is a new feature interview that will be happening with all of the picture book authors and poets he loves! Today the Turkeybird is actually interviewing a favorite author of his mom’s, Kimberley Griffiths Little. Her recent book, The Healing Spell, cast it’s own spell on his sweet mom and she’s been forever changed by it. To read more about that, just stop by her review of The Healing Spell, but for now sit back and enjoy an interview with a 3 year old and a fabulous author!

1. You write books…is that fun?
Fun, Challenging, Mind-Numbing, Emotional, Hair-Pulling, Satisfying, and Exhilarating!
2. If you could do something else what would you do?
I’d be one of those people stalking the local library – or stocking the shelves.
3. I really like markers, but what do you like better – Crayons or markers?
Markers definitely, they’ve got gorgeous, brilliant colors in big packs.
4. Do you have a big family?
I have three sons and one husband so I guess sort of a middle-sized family, but I grew up with 6 kids (5 siblings) and I have LOTS of cousins, nephews and nieces, aunts/uncles, which is crazy fun at family reunions.
5. Do they like your books?
Um, I think so . . . I sold 12 to relatives at the last family get-together.
6. What’s your favorite part about your book out now?
*That* is a hard question! Like asking, do I like my baby’s blue eyes better than his cute toes? One of my favorite parts is when Livie sees her mamma’s painting in the art cottage *magically* finished and runs in the house to find mud on Mamma’s feet – which has GREAT significance. But I also like the scene where Livie pushes T-Boy into the bayou, lol!
7. Sometimes I really like blue, but red is also a great color. What’s your favorite color?
Purple all the way! And I was SO thrilled when I first saw the finished copies of THE HEALING SPELL and they put the purple hyacinth on the cover AND there was purple interior!
8. My mom was telling me about crawfish and I was wondering…do you wear a bib like Littlbug does when you’re eating them?
Lots of napkins!
9. What’s your favorite food? Mine is chocolate!
Caramel/Pecan cinnamon rolls. Or cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting. Yum! Well, and I love brownies. And donuts with sprinkles. Yeah, I’m a junk food gal.
10. We live at the ocean and I don’t like going in the water, it’s kind of scary. Do you?
Deep, dark water always scared me – still does. But I love wading in the ocean and finding shells and cool creatures in tide pools. I grew up near San Francisco.
11. My mom said you go lots of places. Where was the first place you ever went?
My family went camping all over the West when I grew up. Redwood forests, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Disneyland. But I adore the castles in Scotland, too. And the pastry shops in Paris.
12. Is there somewhere you still want to go?
Italy! Greece! Back to Scotland.
13. Where is your favorite place to read? Mine is on the couch with my mom or in my room in my “reading spot”.
Definitely my bed. With lots of pillows.
14. Do you have a favorite kid’s book? Right now I really like Elephant & Piggie, they’re great!
My favorite book growing up was The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge. I read everything; MG, fantasy, YA, paranormal, historical, contemporary, family stories, you name it, I read it!
15. Who would you read it to?
My three sons and I read together all the time. My husband read the entire Chronicles of Prydain out loud and he did voices for all the different characters. We still talk about how great that was.
16. When you were a kid what was your favorite thing to do?
Read. Like a maniac. I didn’t even watch TV that much.
17. I’m hoping to get to go to Disneyland someday soon, what is the best ride there?
All of them! Especially the very fast ones. Once my whole extended family was there (aunts/uncles/cousins/siblings) and we hit a lull at Thunder Mountain, the train roller coaster. We just kept running around to get back into the empty line and went on the ride about 7 times over and over again. Way fun!
18. Do you have a favorite at Disneyland? I really like Donald Duck, but that’s because he’s so funny!
Sleeping Beauty because she’s beautiful and glamorous. Or Minnie Mouse who is so cute!
19. We just went trick-or-treating. Do you have a favorite candy?
Mine was…no, I can’t really decide, I liked all of it! Snickers and Milky Way bars. With a side of M&Ms.
20. What would you teach me if you could spend time with me for a day?
We’d go for a walk along the Rio Grande where I live and find the baby ducks and birds and probably a lizard or two.

The Turkeybird Speaks: “Kimberley, thank you so much for stopping by today and putting up with all my funny questions! My mom can’t stop talking about your book and I get the feeling that when I get a bit older I’ll be reading it with her. I also have to say I love your picture with the alligator! Now I need to find one of those, maybe I can talk my mom and dad into one for Christmas! Hehe.

“Thank you again Kimberley! If I’m ever near the Rio Grande we will have to get together, I love lizards!”

I like to read to my kids and make all the funny voices. Glad to know someone else does too, I’m not the only goofy parent making silly voices.
