Pages: 48

Ages: 3-7

Publishers Summary: The latest book in this acclaimed series explores the major attributes of the grassland biome and showcases its striking beauty and remarkable diversity using examples from around the globe.

Award-winning author Cathryn Sill and her husband, noted wildlife illustrator John Sill, offer young readers a first glimpse into grassland habitats. In simple, easy-to-understand language, this guide teaches children what grasslands are and what kinds of animals and plants live there.

John Sill’s beautifully detailed full-color illustrations reflect the diversity of grasslands-from North America’s tallgrass prairies to African savannas. A wide variety of the plants and animals that live in grassland habitats are also represented. A glossary and afterword provide readers with further fascinating details.

The Turkeybird Speaks: “Wow! Did you know there are all kinds of places animals and plants live all over the world. I was so surprised when I talked with my mom about all the animals and places that were far away from where we live, because the earth is so big!

“My very favorite were the lions on the page with the zebras! But I also thought the ant eaters looked super neat. I even asked my mom if we could get one because she really doesn’t like ants and I thought it would be good to have something that would eat them. But she said no. Too bad! That would have been super super neat!

“This is a really neat book. I liked all the animals, but I also really liked that I could read most of it by myself and the parts I couldn’t I asked my mom to read for me. It was also so cool to see all the different animals, you might have even seen some of them before!”

Mom’s Two Cents: “What exactly does it mean when you call a place Grasslands? Is it a lonely prairie in a far away country or could it be in your very own backyard? Are there only lions, snakes and gazelles that live there? The answer to most of these questions happens to be yes. Grasslands are all around in the world we live with a variety of animals and plants that occupy the land there. Through Cathryn and John Sill’s next installment in the About Habitats series they take a closer look into the world of Grasslands.

“Incredible. Grasslands was a book you could tell was intended for a large audience and was executed extremely well. This book in the About Habitats series, as well as the others, takes the reader from basic text and pictures to more detailed information about each page and finally to a glossary of terms. There is quite literally something for every level of reader. Like the Turkeybird mentioned, it was so nice to be able to allow him to learn on his own about the plants and animals in text he could read on his own, but also be provided with a section that needed a little more explaining. This set the perfect environment for teaching and sharing. It was wonderful!

“Cathryn and John Sill have created an educational and gorgeous series of books, Grasslands being no exception. It’s beautiful illustrations fill each set of pages with animals like giraffes, butterflies and white tail deer that children will beg for answers about and parents will love talking about. In addition to the illustrations the text also makes Grasslands an easily accessible book for early readers as well as a fantastic educational tool for all who enjoy learning about the environment in the world around them. Absolutely a must have book and series for young scientists as well as those looking to learn more about the world we live in!”

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 3 and up. A perfect educational book that progresses throughout, making it accessible for the youngest of readers but interesting for older readers as well!
