At the Sea Floor Cafe by Leslie Bulion and Illustrated by Leslie Evans

Ages: 8-12

Publishers Summary: Witty poems and elegant artwork let us know what’s on the menu for some unusual undersea creatures.

The ocean covers two-thirds of our planet. It is Earth’s largest ecosystem, full of organisms that make a living in wildly different and even extreme environments.

This clever collection of poems for kids describes the devious and sometimes surprising methods ocean denizens use to forage for food, capture prey, trick predators, and protect their young. The poems bobble and swim effortlessly from page to page, leading us from the snailshell home of the jeweled anemone crab to a raft of violet snails hanging upside down in their bubble houses. At the Sea Floor Cafe includes science notes with details about each animal’s behavior, a glossary, and an appendix explaining the types of poems that appear on each spread. Striking linoleum prints round out this title, which can be used across the curriculum.

With thousands of “fish in the sea” what’s a kid to do about learning all of them? At the Sea Floor Cafe does just that, it takes many of the most fascinating creatures in the ocean and sheds new light on their sometimes silly behaviors. Read about the broody squid, narwhal whales, snails and even a leopard sea cucumber in completely original and witty poetry that will help even very early readers remembering these fun creatures of the sea floor.

At the Sea Floor Cafe was an incredibly fun read, one that I even considered having the Turkeybird review because he enjoyed many parts of it. Some of it was a little too advanced for his four year old self, but I have no doubt that in the years to come we will be returning to this valuable resource for school and just general fun. He really enjoyed all the “singing” I did as I read the poetry to him about the various sea creatures and likewise loved the illustrations on nearly every page. It’s absolutely the perfect introduction to the ocean waters and their mysteries for young beginning readers, but even better for the eight to ten crowd I believe.

What was so enjoyable about the way At the Sea Floor Cafe was set up was that everything on each page worked together. It wasn’t only the poetry or the illustrations or even the text and informational background individually, it was all of it working together. I will have to say there were a few things that made my tummy a bit queasy, but to be honest, I’m a bit sensitive. If that’s not evident in my past book reviews, then Turkeybird’s enjoyment over listening to me describe these somewhat yucky points (like spewing toxic guts) should definitely be a good indication. He loved all those bits and would often ask me to read them again. Even still, I cannot discount how incredibly educational this book is. There is a glossary, references and notes on each of the poems that I believe would be beneficial in almost any classroom and not just a science class.

Those of you with budding oceanographers or storytellers in your home will absolutely want a copy of At the Sea Floor Cafe. Filled to the brim with information and poetry about the most interesting creatures in the sea, there’s definitely something to be learned by all. Take a closer look at the life of a coconut octopus, epaulette shark, a violet snail and many more in this incredibly educational and enjoyable book for young readers!

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 7 to 14. Readers will not only learn about sea creatures, but be entertained by the delightful music-like poetry on every page of this wonderful book.
