Angel Burn by L.A. Weatherly

Published by Candlewick Press

Pages: 464

Ages: Young Adult (14 and up)

Publishers Summary: Willow knows she’s different from other girls, and not just because she loves tinkering with cars. Willow has a gift. She can look into the future and know people’s dreams and hopes, their sorrows and regrets, just by touching them. She has no idea where this power comes from. But the assassin, Alex, does. Gorgeous, mysterious Alex knows more about Willow than Willow herself. He knows that her powers link to dark and dangerous forces, and that he’s one of the few humans left who can fight them. When Alex finds himself falling in love with his sworn enemy, he discovers that nothing is as it seems, least of all good and evil. In the first book in an action-packed, romantic trilogy, L..A. Weatherly sends readers on a thrill-ride of a road trip – and depicts the human race at the brink of a future as catastrophic as it is deceptively beautiful.
They’re out for your soul . . . and they don’t have heaven in mind.

At the Church of Angels it’s not uncommon to have unearthly experiences at any given moment of the day. In broad daylight or in a large group of people angles can be seen at anytime. This is the world Willow lives in and to her, a teen with a psychic ability and a hidden gift she’s unaware of, it seems fairly normal until she discovers the true nature of the angels visiting earth and their desire to destroy her. As Willow desperately tries to escape she’s helped by an unknown boy, Alex, and though he keeps himself at a distance it won’t be long before they can hardly stay apart from each other. In an adventure to the very end Willow with her other worldly gift and Alex, whose fought the angels his entire life, will do everything in their power to save the world and each other.

Angel Burn is one of the fastest nearing 500 page novels I’ve read in a very long time. Oddly enough, I even wished the end was just a bit longer believe it or not! The concept of having the angels be the bad guys was so completely original and that alone had me eager to find out how the story would progress. Angels aren’t as originally believed, heavenly, but are those who drain the life out of the humans they appear to, leaving them ill and with long lasting complications without them ever knowing for sure the source of their ailments. It could have been extremely anti-religious, but honestly I didn’t get that at all, never in all my reading did that even seem to be an issue to me. So extremely well written in that aspect, Angel Burn is the first in a new YA series that will have you guessing until the very end.

Now, of course there has to be a romantic element doesn’t there? Well, initially in the book I wasn’t sure there would be. Granted there were the obligatory fabulously gorgeous lead girl and guy, but they couldn’t stand each other to the point where one wished the other dead in the beginning of the book. Well, that may or may not change…okay, it does, but I loved the way it changed! It wasn’t an overnight “oh my goodness I’ve loved you forever” within 20 or even 100 pages, but it developed slowly and realistically. It was great! Hardly anyone I’ve ever know in real life falls in love without angst or hesitation, but books seem to be the opposite as of late. Well, Angel Burn is not like books of late. It was the perfect mix of angst and love.

Young adult fiction readers are in for a fantastic adventure with a bit of romance when the delve into the world of Angel Burn. LA Weatherly’s debut novel is original, her characters honest and real, and her storytelling ability keeps you turning the pages and leaves you begging for more when you’re done. I for one am anxious to see where this story goes from here and apparently with a planned December 2011 release readers won’t have to wait long. Angels, half angels, a battle to ensure the fate of the earth, romance and much more await readers of this newly released debut novel Angel Burn. It’s one I guarantee you don’t want to miss!

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 14 and up. An original concept that will captivate Young Adult readers everywhere. Don’t miss this action packed romance!
