Performancing Metrics

Today I have the wonderful opportunity of hosting debut author, L.M. Long. Her new novel, Founder, is out now and it’s certainly one you don’t want to miss! Look for my review later this week, but until then I’d like to share with you one of the most powerful guest posts I’ve ever had here at There’s A Book. In a matter of less than 250 words she is able to convey an incredible glance into her teenage life. And so, without further hesitation on my part, author L.M. Long with her version of “Teenage Garage Sale”…

I was the most popular girl my Senior year of High School.
And I wasn’t a cheerleader.
I wasn’t a jock, or an AP scholar, or even that pretty.
I was a normal, if somewhat mousy and snarky Senior, who happened to be at the center of the biggest controversy our High School would ever see.
It affected my life, and subsequently the way I would view people- in a profoundly different way.
I realized I never wanted to be popular. I was much happier sharing private jokes at the expense of others, with an intimate group of friends.

So my Teenage Garage Sale begins with a copy of Sylvia Plath’s, The Bell Jar. What felt like my Bible for Senior year. Then there was the scratchy cassette tape of Alanis Morissette live. My teenage anthem. Ripped jeans, a well worn pair of Brooks running shoes (running is still my favorite form of escape), the black Reef flip flops. Then there was my true love. Three periods of Art. My pastels, my hunk of clay, my easel, all my canvases I will never sell. Maybe the only thing I can bear to part with is my AP calculus book I was required to buy, because I had scribbled inside all the pages.
I Hate You Jen.
Yes, maybe I can finally let that one go.

Thank you Laura for your amazing words. This is truly one of my favorite guest posts and certainly you are an author I’ll be looking for great things from!

Please don’t miss the rest of the tour for L.M. Long’s Founder with The {Teen} Book Scene because you certainly don’t want to miss all of the beautiful writing, interviews, reviews and more!

  1. Now I’m curious about the controversy.

When I started listing the items, I realized each item viewed individually may have told a completely different story about who I was- but viewed together it was a powerful glimpse into my life at the time. To tell the real story would take much more than 250 words. Thank you for having me, and I hope you enjoy reading Founder (which is loosely based on another true story). I would love to take over your blog again, any old time you’d have me! I’ll be checking in later today for more comments, and to answer any questions. :)

    Terrific guest post.

  4. Great post! Reminds me of Hemingway’s famous short story “For sale: baby shoes, never worn”.

@Stephanie lol! I just finished “not quite what I was planning” a collection if six word memoirs, so maybe that did have something to do with it (although this is more like flash nonfiction ;)
