There's A Book

Today I have the privilege of welcoming the fantastic author of the recently released Virtuosity, Jessica Martinez, to There’s A Book. Because I love finding about the books that got readers writing I’m always excited to share an “Into the Past” guest post from an author. It’s especially fun when I loved their book as much as I did with Jessica’s. After you’re finished here don’t forget to check out my review of Virtuosity as well. So, without further hesitation on my part, Jessica Martinez with her favourite books from ages 6, 12, 16 and 20…

Age 6: The Witches, by Roald Dahl. This book drew me in and freaked me out. I just gave it to my six-year-old so he can be similarly enthralled and disturbed. I’m not sure what that says about me as a mom.

Age 11: The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis. I got so lost in this world! I may have actually thought I was a character in the book for, I don’t know…years?

Age 16: Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte. Hooray for the smart, shy, good girl who finds love and conquers all! At age 16, I was the smart, shy, good girl who was yet to find love or conquer much, so this book gave me hope.

Age 21: Bel Canto, by Ann Patchett. This book made me ache to sit down and write. It’s that beautiful. It also made me see the world differently, and that, just as much as the gorgeous writing, made me want to be a writer myself. I realized I wanted to affect people like that too.

Thank you again to Jessica for stopping by today and sharing these wonderful books with There’s A Book readers! It’s wonderful to see how reading has influenced you from even a very young age and obviously added in your career as a writer.

Jane Eyre was one of my favorite teen books . . . I read it over and over. I reread it a few years ago and still love it!
