This weeks topic? Top Ten Books That Whose Titles Or Covers Made Me Buy It

I’m seriously beyond thrilled for this topic! Anyone who reads my blog knows I’m a cover hound. Yes, I love all kinds of books, but a pretty cover will turn my head faster than almost anything. I’m kind of cheating too because some of these I didn’t technically buy (a publisher may have sent me a copy), but if I had to I certainly would! So besides loving this topic I think I may have a difficult time narrowing it down to ten, but I’m going to give a try. Here goes!

1. Cinder by Marissa Meyer – Just a gorgeous cover. Love the shoe (and I’m not normally a “shoe” girl). Love the glimmer of robot. It’s even cooler in person!

2. This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers – From the second I saw this cover I was in love. Look at the blood splatter in the top left corner! And is the girl a zombie or not? Love it. It’s already on my list to pre-order as soon as I can.

3. Savannah Grey by Cliff McNish – Totally creepy cover and it was absolutely the reason I picked up the book. I was so intrigued by the throat and the lack of color that I couldn’t help but be curious. It paid off too because it’s an excellent read!

4. Dust & Decay by Jonathan Maberry – Are you noticing a trend? I am. Yes, I love zombie books, creepy books, and stories that make you wonder what scurries in the dark. For those of us who love that stuff this is the perfect cover. Love her scream, the intrigue, everything.

5. Don’t Breathe a Word by Holly Cupala – This one had everything to do with the colors. You rarely see this color combo on a cover and I love the yellow! It’s perfect and the book is fantastic!

6. The Bird Sisters by Rebecca Rasmussen – Gorgeous! I love the birds! In person it’s even more beautiful with not only the colors popping, but the actual cover is very tactile with embossing of the prints and birds. Love it!

7. The Wizard of Dark Street by Shawn Thomas Odyssey – This was another book I pre-ordered (it’s out now) because I loved the house, the girl, the spooky factor. All of it.

8. The Belly Book by Fran Manushkin – This is more for my kiddos, but I love the colors. And the moment I saw it I knew it was a Dan Yaccarino, who happens to be a favorite in our home.

9. The Secret Lives of Princesses by Philippe Lechermeier – Beautiful illustration(s). I love the read and the abnormally large princess head. Immediately I wondered what exactly this was about. It’s fabulous by the way.

10. Here’s A Little Poem: A Very First Book of Poetry by Polly Dunbar – Love Polly Dunbar and the second I saw this I knew my Littlebug would love it…and she does! The little girl skipping along on the front and the bright yellows, just so much fun for kiddos.

Now, your turn! Do you have a favorite cover or do you not even pay attention to that at all?

If you want more details just click on the title and you’ll be taken to my review or Goodreads.

Love your list! I love the title “Belly Book” but I think Princesses is my fave cover – all great selections though :-)

  2. Bree says:

The cover for Dust and Decay looks awesome…must get that one soon!

  3. Sarah Brown says:

I love these especially Cinder and Dust And Decay.

  4. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo with you Cinder.

  5. Very cool finds! I’m quite curious now about Cinder!

  6. Amanda Pearl says:

I like the Bird Sisters and I really don’t like birds haha. It’s a pretty cover though.

  7. Kat says:

Lovely list! I have the Bird Sisters too, great book. That Dust and Decay looks super creepy, in a good way!

  8. Gina says:

Aw yes…what a topic indeed! A cover, despite what we try to keep in mind when browsing, can play a HUGE role in whether a title is picked up for a closer look. Great choices here…though the first one, story wise I don’t think is for me (I was caught by the cover too! ^_^)….probably favorite of these is THE WIZARD OF DARK STREET. My own favorite cover? Oh too many to choose from! A few though….HUSH HUSH (intriguing)…TWILIGHT (simplicity)…there’s a kids storybook series w/Julie Andrews feat SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW and WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR, with GORGEOUS covers (seek them out, you’ll see)….and I could continue, but I won’t. Fab post as usual Danielle!

    • The Wizard of Dark Street is a great choice! I love the book and the cover! Totally agree with you, a cover really can make or break a book unfortunately. That’s not to say I haven’t read books with just so-so covers, but the cover really can draw you in.

Also completely agree on Twilight and Hush Hush! I’m going to have to check out your kids book choices, they sound fabulous! Thank you! :)

  9. Jenni Elyse says:

I love Cinder’s cover too. I still haven’t put it on my TBR List. I think I’ll go do that right now. Thanks for the reminder, lol.

I also love the other covers you’ve chosen. I love how whimsical the cover for The Secret Lives of Princesses is.

  10. Kayla says:

The cover of The Wizard of Dark Street really captured my attention. I immediately had to look up the book to see what it was about as soon as I saw the cover. Sounds interesting!

  11. Jessica says:

I really can’t get behind the Dust and Decay novel. I spent too many years working for a dental insurance company and get distracted by the DECAY right across the teeth. It’s like it can’t be anything BUT a mouthwash ad in my sad, warped, little mind.

On a slightly related topic, I really wish that they’d stop replacing awesome covers with not so awesome ones in later editions. This happens a LOT to fairytales (Robin McKinley and Alex Flinn books come to mind). But this is just a pet peeve of mine :)

Love the This is Not a Test cover!

    • Well that stinks! Especially since Dust & Decay as well as Rot & Ruin (the first in the series) are both amazing books. Hopefully you can slip the book jacket off and enjoy the books! You wouldn’t want to miss out!

I completely agree…definitely not a fan of changing great covers to not-so-great covers. :(

This is Not a Test is such a brilliant cover! I can’t wait to read it!

  12. Sophia Lee says:

Cinder. Cinder. Cinder. Cinder. Cinder!! I absolutely love that cover so much! Great list :)
