There's A Book

Each week The Broke and the Bookish host this fantastic weekly feature that poses different bookish questions.

This weeks topic? Top Ten Book Endings That Left Me With My Mouth Hanging Open (because of the cliffhanger or because it the ending was MINDBLOWING, etc. Be careful with spoilers on this one! :P)

Today I’m going to keep my explanations short and sweet as to not spoil any readers who still need to pick these books up. If you want more details just click on the title and you’ll be taken to my review or Goodreads.

1. The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness – One word…Manchee. If you don’t know which character in the book that is, you must go read this book now!

2. The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness – This choice is all about the cliffhanger, the wanting to know where in the world Todd is going to end up and what will happen to one of the most powerful bad guys in literature, Mayor Prentiss.

3. The Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness – The end. Wow! From everything being finished to how it’s left. I still want more! Loved this series, obviously.

4. Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry – Flying spaceships/aircraft in a zombie book? Not only did I learn (directly from the author’s lips) that this is one heck of a cliffhanger, but readers will have to read all four books before they discover what it’s all about. Wow!

5. Birthmarked by Caragh O’Brien – This is the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers. Thankfully the second in the series, Prized, will finally be released next month and I’ve already read it! (Now I simply want the next in the series!)

6. Unearthly by Cynthia Hand – All about the guy and her destiny. Where is Clara going to end up? Soon we’ll all know!

7. Wither by Lauren DeStefano – Seriously! A snow filled city with a movie theater as an escape destination. I’m dying to know what will happen to everyone in this series, not only Rhine, but everyone.

8. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling – With a significant death at the end of this book and the ultimate “demise” of the series this was a book I finished and impatiently waited for the last book. Well worth it, of course.

9. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro – If you haven’t read this and love dystopian fiction than you are missing out. The ending completely blew me away. It wasn’t at all what I expected to happen and left me with tons of very thought provoking questions. Loved it!

10. We Are In a Book by Mo Willems – No list at There’s A Book is complete without Mo Willems. This one is destined to be a classic ending. Every kid wants their favorite books read to them over and over and over and over again. Well, in We Are In a Book Piggie and Elephant solve that by making the story one that never ends! So very very clever.

So, what about you? Do you have a book where the ending simply blew you away? I’d love to read it!

  1. Agreed on Birthmarked (which is the only one of those I’ve read). I have And Never Let Me Go to read, so I’ll let you know about that one, too 🙂

Robert Cormier often leaves me gobsmacked. I am the Cheese–what an ending!

  2. I had Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Wither on my lists as well. HBP made me cry when I read it. As for Wither, the character I felt sorry for was Linden.

  3. Jan von Harz says:

Both the first two Chaos Walking books had me slack jawed and I forgot to add them to my list, but saw it on someone elses too and figured you would have it on yours as I know how much you enjoyed them. Need to get Rot and Ruin.

  4. So with you on Unearthly. I can’t wait for more.

  5. Agree with you on Birthmarked and Wither –good endings . Great picks

  6. Great list, and yes, Manchee!!!!!!

  7. I was totally surprised by Half Blood Prince’s ending. Although now it seems inevitable. I was also surprised with the big twist in Unearthly.

  8. Gina says:

So…you’re a fan of Patrick Ness then right? (LOL. ^_^) Definitely agree on WITHER…can’t wait for FEVER to be released (though that sounds like an epidemic…)….and how can one not agree with the Harry Potter inclusion! There was never a nice and tidy ending til book 7. Great list Danielle! Happy reading….

  9. Never Let me Go is definately worthy of this week’s topic! HBP did have a huge jaw-dropping ending. I also loved the many twists at the end of Book 3.

  10. Nise' says:

I agree with the Chaos Walking series.

  11. trish says:

I’m very excited about Never Let Me Go! I just added a copy to my TBR shelf. I sounds like something I’d really enjoy.

  12. Jenni Elyse says:

Half-Blood Prince didn’t make my list because I knew Dumbledore would die. But, after reading a few bloggers’ lists, I realize that I had no idea who would kill him and boy was it a MAJOR shock to the system.

  13. Georgina says:

Great list. I would definatly agree with Harry Potter. I plan on reading Birthmarked and Prized very soon, as I now have both and I am going to be getting Wither too seeing as I have heard so many good things about it

  14. Lori D says:

I definitely have not been reading enough- except for #10, I have not heard of any of these (well, Harry Potter…). I need to get on it! Thanks for sharing.

  15. carol says:

The only one I’ve read on your list was Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and I don’t actually remember the ending.

  16. Erin says:

You have some great ones on this list! I totally agree with all the ones I’ve read (the Ness trilogy, Harry Potter, and Never Let Me Go). I’d add When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. I thought I wasn’t really going to like the book, until I got to the end, when it all just came together. So good! I like that you included Elephant and Piggie. I haven’t read this particular one, but I often thing Willems has clever endings for his books. I’ll have to check this one out!
