There's A Book

Over at the Castle by Boni Ashburn and Illustrated by Kelly Murphy

In this clever reworking of the classic folk song “Over in the Meadow,” readers meet villagers who spent their day spinning, cleaning, cooking, dancing, and more. The text counts up from one baby dragon to ten court jesters, and kids will enjoy counting along with each of the characters as they go about their daily work. At the end of the day, all the villagers look out their windows for a special surprise from their dragon neighbors. Readers will pore over illustrations filled with the same unexpected, warm humor of Boni Ashburn and Kelly Murphy’s first book, Hush, Little Dragon.

My first introduction to Over at the Castle was via Jen Robinson’s Book Page and her review of this fantastic book. I’m so glad I caught it because it’s now been a favorite in our house for some time now. Not only that, but again I’ve been surprised to discover how many books I’ve loved by the illustrator that I didn’t connect before. Books like Creepy Monsters, Sleepy Mosters by Jane Yolen, Fiona’s Luck by Teresa Bateman, and the Nathaniel Fludd Beastologist series by R.L. LaFevers. So again, another case of discovering more great books simply because of a fantastic author/illustrator!

I won this one from MotherReader about a year ago and we love it! The cute little knights are my favorite 🙂 I had it in my head the whole time that the little dragon was waiting to eat the people, so the end was a great surprise!
