Publishers Summary:

The Riverton family had been enjoying a simple summer vacation when, through a fluke of nature, they found themselves in a strange new land.

The Riverton brothers quickly realize that in this world, they have gained unusual powers. Powers that their parents fear will attract the attention of Azazel himself – the merciless wizard who brutally controls this world.

The two brothers soon learn that an ancient prophecy has finally been initiated by their arrival in Trimoria. As the heirs of this prophecy, they are destined to lead the armies of men, dwarves, elves, and even a misfit ogre against the prophesied demon horde.

Only one thing stands in their way.

The evil wizard who has learned of their presence, and has sent assassins to wipe them from existence.

A family in a lost land filled with strange creatures, magic and adventure. As the Riverton family sets off on their summer vacation they stumble into a place they never knew existed, Trimoria. What began as a simple camping trip in Arizona turns out to be just the adventure each of the members of the Riverton family needed. Along there way they meet a new friends and particularly a family that welcomes and cares for them. In addition to this new land they each now possess a hidden talent that could potentially save them and their new home.

Heirs of Prophecy by Michael A. Rothman was a fun-filled fantasy adventure that young readers will no doubt enjoy if they’re at all interested in books similar to The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis and Inheritance by Christopher Paolini. This story starts off with a scene from the land of Trimoria featuring the evil wizard Azazel much the way the new series by Brandon Mull, The Beyonders, does and then quickly leads into the “real world” experience of the Riverton family heading off on vacation. For a number of reasons I can see why a young thirteen or fourteen year old boy or girl would love the possibilities and imagination surrounding the concept of an entire family being whisked away into another land and then also being given magical abilities that enable them to conquer a great evil. It’s certainly a novel I’d eagerly recommend to those readers.

Each of the characters in this book were fairly easy to relate to and as I’ve mentioned I could see how it would be relatively easy for a young reader to connect with the story line. As for myself, as an adult reader, there were a number of things I had to put out of my mind while reading the story. Aspects like the husband planning an entire family vacation without his wife having any idea of what state they were even traveling to, especially after a previously botched vacation. Also, a cat (Silas) that no matter how helpful or charming it is later in the book was brought on a camping trip? Who does that? To be honest, I think I could have done without the entire “real life” portion of the story and skipped straight to the fantasy portion because it was much more intriguing. My only concerns with the majority of the remaining parts of the books were that the family wasn’t too concerned about getting back home once they’d “settled” with Throll’s family, the story got a bit slow in parts and I felt as though it’s primary purpose was to set up for future novels in the series. Beyond that the world building was fantastic, the characters were believable and I still feel as though it would absolutely be enjoyed by younger readers.

Overall Heirs of Prophecy by Michael A. Rothman was an adventure into an uncharted magical land that older middle grade and young teen readers will absolutely love. Main characters, Ryan and Aaron, made a fantastic pair of brothers in search of not only adventure but the thrill of discovery. Though not entirely recommended for adult readers, myself included, Heirs of Prophecy would no doubt be a hit and I’m certain will continue to be enjoyed as future installments of the series are published. Heirs of Prophecy by Michael A. Rothman is the perfect read for young readers who enjoyed reading other series by authors like Christopher Paolini and Brandon Mull.

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 11 to 15. The beginnings of a fantasy adventure series that young readers will thoroughly enjoy, though not overly recommended for adult readers.
