There's A Book

Each week The Broke and the Bookish host this fantastic weekly feature that poses different bookish questions.

This weeks topic? Top Ten Characters I’d switch places with for 24 hours

Okay, so the problem with this topic this go around is that I’m really in need of a good relaxing vacation, but how many books do you know that center around a stress-free girl sitting pool side sans kiddos? Probably not many if there are any at all, at least not many with a very good plot line. Haha. So, I found that a lot of my choices were sidekicks or onlookers who didn’t get too involved in the action most of the time. What can I say? I’m normally facing down the evils of a dirty home and two rambunctious kiddos that would rather I be a personal jungle gym than a mom, I could use a little on-looking now and then.

1. Hermione Granger from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling - What girl out there didn’t want to be Hermione? She’s smart, funny, has magic powers and saves the day on numerous occasions. Love her and would love a chance to step in her shoes, but perhaps on one of her quieter days.

2. Isabelle Lightwood from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare - What can I say? She’s my kind of character. Indifferent on the outside, completely a wreck on the inside, but also powerful when she needs to be. Oh, and she always knows what to say and says it at exactly the right time…I never manage that. It’s always thirty minutes later when I come up with the killer one liners and obviously, that’s way too late.

3. Emily Benedict from The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen - This is not only a favorite book, but a favorite author of mine. All of Sarah Addison Allen’s books are steeped in gorgeous magical realism and her characters get to live in these delightful southern locations. It’s wonderful. Emily was a character I envied. She moved to a new town with her grandfather (who I adored) and began to see the “magic” almost instantly as her room took on her moods by switching the wallpaper suddenly. Loved every minute of this book.

4. Julia Winterson from The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen - Yes, two from the same book! I adored this book and all the characters, but Julia was not only a character I loved but she could make magical cakes. Who wouldn’t love to delight people with magical pastries? It’s heavenly to think of.

5. Penelope Tredwell from Twelve Minutes to Midnight by Christopher Edge - My first read of 2012 and by far one of my favorite middle grade reads ever. I loved this book! Penelope is tenacious, intelligent, intuitive and also a writer. At the beginning of the story you discover she’s taken over the running of her father’s paper and writing the vast majority of the columns and stories herself at only thirteen. I loved everything about her character and the investigative trouble she gets herself into!

6. Prince Liam’s sister Lila from The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy - Who to pick in this story is the real question? There are so many great characters, but I’d definitely say I’d want to stick with Lila. She’s got that Hermione quality about her with taking off on adventures on her own and tackling great tasks that normally are “meant” for guys. I loved her and her adventures the very most out of this incredible adventure, and I’m really hoping to see her again in the sequel!

7. Jonah from Whatever After: Fairest of All by Sarah Mlynowski - Yes, I’d love to be a seven year old adventuresome boy! Jonah and his big sister Abby end up in a land of fairy tales and adventure, but he’s the one who gets to laugh it up while his sister figures it all out. Of course in the end he comes to the rescue, but throughout the entire rest of the book…he’s the one having all the fun. That sounds perfect to me!

8. Cat the Cat from Time to Sleep, Sheep the Sheep! by Mo Willems - Sleep!? You can’t go wrong with a Mo Willems book about going to sleep. Although, I can’t decide if going to sleep or being able to stay up all night like the owl is the better option in my current situation with writing deadlines and such.

9. The Bear from No Bears by Meg McKinlay - The real reason, the bear is the character my kiddos love the very most. They love that he fixes everything and makes life good for the (very spoiled) princess. He makes them laugh, and I love that the very most.

10. Scaredy Squirrel from the Scaredy Squirrel series by Mélanie Watt - Because in my heart I’m truly a paranoid squirrel who doesn’t want to leave my comfort zone.

Now, your turn! Which character would you love to take over for 24 hours?

If you want more details just click on the title and you’ll be taken to my review or Goodreads.

31 Responses to Top Ten Tuesday: Switch It Up!

  1. I’d trade with Clary. I’d want to suck the face off of Jace! Hahaha!

  2. Man do I ever hear you on the “personal jungle gym” thing.

I like your body switch choices, but I’m going to choose to switch places with a cat. Any cat, any book. I will spend my day sleeping and scratching anyone who bothers me :)

  3. We have Izzy in common… I love that girl!

  4. Nina says:

Hermione Granger, it would be fun to switch places with her. Think of all the adventures! Also the spells and lots of magical books she can read. ;) Yep, that sounds good to me.

  5. KateB says:

Hermione and Isabelle – they’re are ones that I’ve read and I think they’re fantastic choices. Now I’m thinking I should read some of these other books that have been listed as they sound fantastic!

  6. I love that you chose Julia.
How fun to be able to make magical cakes.
That makes me think of the character in Sugar Queen that had a special relationship with books.
I would love if books spoke to me and followed me about.

  7. I’m so glad to see Hermione on pretty much every list today! I would give anything to trade places with her!

    Great list this week! :)

  8. Gina says:

Love the topic this week though I’d be hard pressed to come up with my own list. Would definitely take some careful consideration. As for your picks….well of course Hermione! Who wouldn’t? Super “scary” smart, not afraid to be the odd one out and gets the friends and the boy….great combo. Wow, two from the same book? Might have to check that one out….think it might be buried in Mount TBR. Never heard of the 12 MINUTES one, but will be investigating as well (you are bad for my wish list….BAD ^_^). Adored Lila too….so many great picks! Hmm, one of my own to add, how about Gwen from A SUMMER IN EUROPE by Marilyn Brant (love her story plus she’s a teacher, gets to go on Euro vaca, see the sites, find herself and a little love on the way)….or maybe Riley from the DEMON TRAPPERS DAUGHTER series (for those kick butt days when you need that attitude and strength to really stare life down)….or…okay, this comment is turning into a post. Sorry! ^_^

    • It was a very very tough week to choose which I’d want to switch with, but really so fun too. :)

I love your picks though! All of them sound amazing in very different ways. I’d love to see a full list! ;)

  9. I had to think long and hard about when I’d take that 24 hours. I figure you can squeeze in during the good times, usually after all the bad stuff happened. Naturally, Hermione is on my list too. :)

  10. Helene says:

I also have Hermione and Isabelle! Great list!

    My TTT

  11. Jenni Elyse says:

Isabelle, huh? It would be kind of fun to be her now that you mention it. I chose Tessa because I want to choose between Will and Jem, even though I have no clue who I’d pick.

I also chose a Harry Potter character, but it wasn’t Hermione. ;)

  12. Krystianna says:

I didn’t even think of using Isabelle on my list! I only used Clary.

    Thanks for sharing. :)

  13. Sounds like a fun group of people to swap places with!

  14. PragmaticMom says:

Yes, I want to be Lila too! Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom is such a great read!!

  15. I love this idea!! It’s so hard to choose though… hm I wanted to try and post my own list but at this late hour I can only think of four so far, it’s hard but here’s my four so far:

    1. The Narrator (we never know her name!) from Elizabeth Kostova’s “The Historian” she gets to travel all over Europe and meet the most interesting people, and of course it doesn’t hurt that Stephen Barley is in the picture :)

    2. Lina from Between Shades of Gray, I know it’s dangerous and depressing, but perhaps the night that they celebrate Christmas in the camps, that would have been a beautiful and powerful event to be a part of and also on a day when she’s with Andrius would be nice

    3. Miss Lumley from The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place! I’ve always thought it might be interesting to be a governess, now I sort of am since I help with homeschooling my little brother, but it’s so different if you’re living in Victorian England with three loving children who happened to be raised by wolves

    4. And Meggie Folchart from Inkheart… she has a father who has the worlds most wonderful reading voice and she has a house filled with books, enough said
