Publishers Summary:

It’s a child’s first day of kindergarten, but who is worried about all the new people and the different things he’ll meet–the child? No! The mother. In a refreshing reversal of roles, the child takes it upon himself to comfort and reassure his mother that everything will be fine, she’ll get used to him going to big-kid school, and yes, he is ready for the first day of kindergarten. Utterly charming in its simplicity, Yum playfully uses size and color to reveal emotions of this milestone beginning.

Turkeybird’s Getting Excited: Did you know I start kindergarten soon!? I can’t wait! There are going to be friends and slides and lots of books!

When I started reading this with my mom I didn’t know why the mom in the book was all blue. The little boy is just like me and super super excited about school, but his mom doesn’t seem so happy. My mom seems really happy to have me go to kindergarten (even if she keeps telling me a need to be nice and listen to my teacher) and I hope she doesn’t turn blue when we go to my new teacher. That would be very silly.

I can’t wait for school to start! It’s going to be so much fun! Just like all the super super fun things this boy gets to do!

Mom’s Two Cents: It’s the first day of kindergarten and who could possibly be more anxious than the one going? The mom. As this adorable little boy sets out on his first big adventure into the world of school and new people and things it’s his mom who struggles to share in the excitement. Will the day go okay? Will they have enough food? Will his teacher know how to help him? All of this and more runs through the mind of a very anxious mom while her very excited son can think of nothing more fun than school…except maybe the bus.

In only two weeks from now the Turkeybird will be heading to school for the first time. I’m sure you can imagine the mixed bag of emotions this event brings up. Excitement for him, anxiousness, fear, love and so much more. Without any doubt Mom, It’s My First Day of Kindergarten! by Hyewon Yum was exactly the book we both needed. This could easily be a picture book aimed specifically at mom’s with kiddos going into kindergarten, but it definitely appealed to both Turkeybird and myself. For him it was all about understanding more clearly my apprehension about certain things like listening to his teacher and being kind to his classmates as well as just plain getting excited about school. As for me, it definitely served as a source of comfort in knowing that I’m not the only mom out there who’s wishing that maybe he had just one more year at home with me. Going to school is definitely an adventure, not only for the kiddos but for the mom’s and dad’s as well.

Mom, It’s My First Day of Kindergarten! by Hyewon Yum is the perfect addition to any picture book collection, especially for those either heading off to school or having their little ones going for the first time. What could easily have been a purely self-indulgent read on my part became a great discussion starter between myself and Turkeybird. Where should he meet me after school, how long will he be gone, will he have friends there and how should he treat them, what will he eat and many more questions are easy to start talking about after reading this delightfully illustrated new book. I’d highly recommend Mom, It’s My First Day of Kindergarten! by Hyewon Yum to anyone getting ready to start school this year, even for those who may be going back for the first or second time because sometimes it’s good to revisit those basics!

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 3 to 6. A perfect book for the beginning of school, especially for kiddos just starting out!

What a cute book! Z’s going into third grade so he has most everything down cold by now but they have a two-floor school and this year his classroom will be upstairs for the first time! There’s always something new but these little guys and gals are amazing at adapting. Turkeybird will have a great time!
