There's A Book

How to Babysit a Grandpa by Jean Reagan and Illustrated by Lee Wildish

This is a hilarious and accessible picture book about a child spending time with his grandpa. Written in a how-to style, the narrator gives important tips for “babysitting” a grandpa, including what to eat for snack (anything dipped in ketchup, ice cream topped with cookies, cookies topped with ice cream) what to do on a walk (find lizards and dandelion puffs, be on the lookout for puddles and sprinklers), and how to play with a grandpa (build a pirate cave, put on a scary play).
Filled with humor, energy, and warmth, this is a great gift for or from a grandparent, and perfect for lap reading when Grandpa comes to visit!

How to Babysit a Grandpa by Jean Reagan was published back in April and somehow I only learned about it recently. This would have made the perfect Father’s Day gift for Grandpa! Now it’s going to make a great gift this holiday season because I can think of at least two Grandpa’s in our lives who get an absolute kick out reading this to the kiddos.

Some of you may recognize Jean Reagan as the author of Always My Brother, a powerful children’s book that explores the often confusing and difficult emotions surrounding the loss of a sibling. Obviously quite different in tone from How to Babysit a Grandpa, but definitely worth your time. It’s an incredible story that I’d highly recommend reading and at the very least stopping by Jean’s site to learn a little more about.

Also, I’d be remiss in failing to mention How to Babysite a Grandpa‘s wonderful illustrator, Lee Wildish. Her site is filled with gorgeous illustrations and her portfolio page is among my absolute favorites!

  1. OMG how cool. I love it. My daughter’s grandpa will definitely need some baby sitting.

Now see straight from the title/cover art, I can definitely see this one being used for ideas on how to get kids that think they are all grown up to accept having a babysitter without a tantrum. ^_^ The time shared between the two sounds wonderfully depicted….heart warming indeed.

Fun! I think I need this one.
