There's A Book

The 20 Question Interview with our very own Turkeybird is our feature interview that happens with all of the book authors, illustrators and poets we love!

Today we are extremely excited about our author/illustrator interview! David Ezra Stein has been a favorite of ours since we first read his book Interrupting Chicken over two years ago. Since then we’ve enjoyed other books he’s either written and/or illustrated like Love, Mouserella, Leaves, The Monster Hug, and most recently Because Amelia Smiled. If you missed our review of this powerful new picture book, I’d highly recommend taking a look at it. For now, enjoy our very exciting interview with none other than award winning author and illustrator…David Ezra Stein.

1. Thirteen years is a very super long time to write a book! I have a book, but it only took me a few days to write and I keep adding to it. Why did it take you so so so long to write about Amelia?

Good things take time. It takes a long time for a little seed to grow into a big plant, and for a little person to grow into a big man or woman. And, sometimes, it takes a long, long time for an idea to grow into a book.

2. Do you like to smile a lot? (I like to, but sometimes I get shy.)

Yes, I love to smile. But sometimes it’s hard for me to smile at a stranger on the street. That’s why I admire Amelia. She has the power to make the world cheerful.

3. Crayons or Colored Pencils?

I love my special watercolor crayons! I used them to make all the art in Because Amelia Smiled.

4. Why?

They are like crayons, but if they get wet they are like watercolor paint. They feel so good when they move across the paper—like butter!

5. What’s your favorite color?

GREEN. Green is for plants.

6. Do you still make puppets? (That sounds super neat!)

I do! In June I made puppets with a bunch of kids in my neighborhood. We hacked up old toys and put them together into fantastic puppet creatures. Then we put on a show for our friends and families. We even got on the TV news.

7. Why?

Why what? Why do I still make puppets? Because it’s awesome. Why did we get on the news? Because we made awesome puppets. That’s why!

8. What book would you read to your son next?

Switching on the Moon is our favorite book to read at bedtime. It has so many wonderful poems that make him sleepy.

9. What was the best book your read when you were five?

Maybe Scrambled Egg Super, by Dr. Seuss. Or What Do People Do All Day, by Richard Scarry. I thought his name was Richard Scary. But he wasn’t scary at all.

10. Do you have a favorite treat? (Right now mine is mint chocolate chip ice cream!)

I love treats. Right now my favorite is coconut-milk ice cream, with cherry syrup on top.

11. When you were my age did you like to write and draw?

YES! I am sending you a picture I drew when I was 5 1/2. I loved to tell stories and draw pictures every day.

12. Do you like to write or draw better?

I love them both. As long as I can make my work fun for myself, it comes out good.

13. I love running, just like you! I’ve even been in a big race before. Have you ever done a race?

I have not been in a race. I love to run in the woods and jump over rocks and roots. Once I saw a big hawk by the side of the path. It was only a few feet away. I scared it and it flew into the tree.

14. Why?

Why what? Why did it fly away? I guess it was scared of runners. Why did I see a hawk? Because it lives in the woods near my house. Why have I never been in a race? Because I like to run at my own speed. That’s why!

15. Chickens, bears, squirrels, mice, snails or monsters? (I’d pick chickens!)

Bears!

16. Why?

Because I think if I were an animal, I’d be a bear. They are fuzzy and strong, and like to eat all kinds of things, just like I do. They like to take naps. I think bears are very funny. That’s why!

17. You’ve got lots and lots of awards, wow! Where do you put them?

I have a special shelf in my studio, where I keep my awards. I don’t really look at them that much. I like to think about new books and new ideas.

18. Swings or Slides?

I love to push my son in the swings. We do all kinds of funny pushes, like Surprise Push, Running Push, and “Boof” Push, where I pretend to be hit by the swing. He laughs.

19. Why?

Why does he laugh? Because he has a silly daddy. That’s why!

20. What are you writing right now?

I am working on a book about a dinosaur!

The Turkeybird Speaks: Thank you so super much for such a great interview! I loved all of your answers so much! I really really liked your picture from when you were my age. I have a whole book I write in like that and my teacher just said that I’m a super good storyteller. Maybe one day I’ll write books like you!

Thank you so so much again David! You had the best answers!
