Publishers Summary:

This first book in an adorable new series will have young readers in stitches.

Claude and his best friend, Sir Bobblysock (who is both a sock and very bobbly), go to the city for the very first time. They go shopping, visit a museum, foil a robbery, and heal an entire hospital waiting room full of patients. All in all, a most satisfactory day for this delightful duo.

TurkeybirdTurkeybird Rambles Through the City: Claude is the most silliest dog I have ever read about in my entire life! His best friend is a stripy sock! A stripy sock! Then they walk all over the city and the sock walks by himself. It’s super funny. And then they see a butt! Well, it’s a statue butt, but it’s still super funny butt.

My favorite part is when they go to the hospital to take care of Sir Bobblysock and Claude used a banana to take everyone’s temperature. How silly is that?! You can’t take a temperature with a banana! But it’s so funny, I laugh so much every time. My mom even caught me reading it in my room because I was laughing so hard. This book is so great! I keep reading it over and over. My mom said there is another one and I’m so excited to read it!

Mom’s Two Cents: Claude. Not your typical dog. Oh sure, he starts out his day in a cozy bed made by two loving owners, Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes, but it’s what happens after the couple leave for work that make Claude unique in every way possible. Stepping out into the city Claude and his good friend Sir Bobblysock discover new people, places and adventures they never imagined. And when Claude’s friend needs help from the local doctor they both end up making a few new friends on their adventure together.

For me Claude In The City was the logical step from reading the Scaredy Squirrel picture book series to chapter books for “grown up” kiddos. Turkeybird has long loved the often rambly comedy of the Scaredy Squirrel books (truth be told, so have I) and now that he’s “older” he’s needed a few great chapter books to love just as much. Claude In The City by Alex T. Smith more than exceeded those needs. From page to page Claude does some of the craziest things and yet while reading it as a parent I can see the wheels turning inside Turkeybird’s six year old head acknowledging that everything seems perfectly normal. More often than not these situations ended with fits of giggles and laughter from not only the kiddos listening (Littlebug included), but also from mom and dad.

Give a dog a red sweater and matching beret, send him off on adventures around town with a best friend that doubles as a striped sock and you’ve got the makings of a chapter book that five to nine year old kiddos are going to rave about. Claude is a riot, a character that adults can enjoy reading aloud and one that young readers will easily connect with. His love of his dear friend, Sir Bobblysock, is encouraging especially to young readers looking to develop similar relationships in their own life, though preferably with humans and not socks. Claude In The City by Alex T. Smith is the beginning of a chapter book series that I have no doubt will be cherished in our home for years to come and Claude himself will forever have a place in the Turkeybird’s boisterous heart.

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 4 to 9. A perfect transition from picture books to chapter books for kiddos who love whimsical characters with big hearts. A fantastic tale of friendship and fun.

You really must watch this hilarious Hungarian trailer for the book series. The music is what makes it I think.

I love Claude! We used to have a guide dog puppy that loved socks and carried one around all the time. The socks didn’t walk with him though!

  3. PragmaticMom says:

You’ve convinced me Turkeybird! This one sounds really funny! I must read it now!!!
