Publishers Summary:

What would you do if you were settling down for a quiet bedtime story and you realized that a crocodile had fallen into your storybook and was — not to put too fine a point on it — wreaking havoc? Would you slam that book shut and cram it back onto the bookshelf? Or would you be brave enough to peek?

TurkeybirdTurkeybird Squawks: Chomp! Chomp! Chomp! Watch out! The crocodile is going to get you! He almost ate that little duck. It was super scary! I still don’t know why there was a crocodile in the story, but he was pretty funny when the duck drew a tutu on him. He didn’t like that at all, but we shook him out of the book pretty hard. And then…he took a big huge super ginormous bite out of the book! Wow! Chomp!!!

Mom’s Two Cents: What begins as the tale of The Ugly Duckling is quickly turned upside down by an invading crocodile who has happened upon the wrong book and doesn’t know where to go. In a desperate attempt to rid his story of it’s intruder the young duckling rocks the crocodile to sleep, but then decides to color on him making the crocodile quite upset when he discovers his new attire is a tutu. Through evasive moves, shaking and eventually biting the crocodile is set free, hopefully never to return.

Open Very Carefully: A Book with Bite by Nick Bromley was initially a book I wanted to review because of the cover. Yes, I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for a great cover and this one has it. Not only that, but the promise of interactivity within the pages was a huge draw. As I’ve experienced with books like Press Here by HervĂ© Tullet and Dot by Patricia Intriago, kiddos love being able to get their hands on and in a book, literally. The shaking, pushing, rocking and any number of other ways you can play with a book only enhance a kiddo’s connection to a great story. Open Very Carefully: A Book with Bite was exactly this and Turkeybird especially enjoyed the silliness of the characters coupled with the ways he could interact with them.

Not only was this a book about being involved in the story, it’s also a story about overcoming fears and using your imagination to think of creative solutions to problems. Here was a duckling with a rather large problem, a crocodile who was very lost and angry, but instead of being fearful the duckling came up with unique ways to solve his problem. It’s a fantastic lesson to teach kiddos because who won’t encounter a problem that needs some creativity to solve? A scary problem at that. Instead of being overwhelmed by the situation the duckling faces his fears and solves his problem, managing to be completely adorable in the process.

Nick Bromley’s text coupled with the gorgeous illustrations of Nicola O’Byrne create a world of imagination, creativity and ingenuity that is the new picture book, Open Very Carefully: A Book with Bite. Kiddos will giggle and connect with both characters as they shake and rock the book they hold in their hands. This is a delightful debut for author Nick Bromley and I’m certain he has a bright future ahead of him as he continues to create characters that both teach and allow kiddos to laugh at the same time.

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 4 to 8. A classic tale flipped on it’s head by an intruding character that little ones will giggle and interact with until the very last page.
