Publishers Summary:

One day, a very hungry fox meets a very plump goose.
A dinner invitation is offered.
Will dinner go as planned? Or do the dinner plans involve a secret ingredient . . . ?
(Don’t forget to listen to the baby geese!)
From the brilliant mind of Mo Willems comes a surprising lesson about listening to your inner gosling.

Turkey's HatThe Turkeybird Ruffles a Few Feathers: That’s one silly fox and one very tricky goose. But my very favoritest part are the baby chickies! They are so super funny popping up all over the book, even on the side of the book! One of them even has a bow-tie on, isn’t that super silly? The silliest though is the chick with his eggshell still on his head! HAHAHA!

But really, this goose isn’t very smart for going on a walk with a fox. Doesn’t she know that foxes eat the gooses? The chickies keep trying to warn her, but she doesn’t listen. And then! There’s a surprise at the end that makes my eyes pop out of my head because I can’t believe it! Wow! That’s one tricky goose!

Mom’s Two Cents: On a chance walk through the city a very sly fox and one very shy goose meet. After a short hello the two decide a walk is in order, but is this a good idea? A few small goslings have something to say about that and they’ll stop at nothing to dissuade the pair from continuing their journey together. Upon their arrival at a small cottage in the woods the fox’s intention to cook the goose becomes quite clear, but the goose has a bit of a surprise that will take both the fox and the reader by surprise.

Mo Willems humor never ceases to delight both young and old. In this newest addition to his rather vast collection of picture books Willems tackles a slightly darker style of storytelling, but adds his characteristic silliness. Within the pages of That Is Not a Good Idea! are full spreads in the style of old silent movies that exclaim things like,

As you read through these short bits of dialogue you can almost hear the music in the background. Outside of the full page noir style text squares the only other dialogue comes from a set of very quirky chicks or goslings. They spend the entirety of the book trying to persuade the pair to stop the course they’re on, but in the end the reader discovers that they weren’t talking about the character you thought they were. It’s quite hilarious actually.

One aspect of the book that will certainly ruin the ending if I share specifics on it may also cause concern for the more protective parent. For one reason or another our home leans toward enjoying the darker humor found in books like Jon Klassen’s I Want My Hat Back and if yours does as well then you won’t be disappointed at all with the ending of That Is Not a Good Idea!. It’s a little gruesome, but then again so were the original Grimm’s Fairy Tales. That said, the ending is quite hilarious in it’s own right and I have no doubt that readers will get a kick out of how the tables are turned at just the right moment.

That Is Not a Good Idea! by Mo Willems takes a very loose version of the story of Little Red Riding Hood, mixes in some original characters and flips it on it’s head to create a hilarious new picture book that older picture book readers will thoroughly love. It’s no doubt that Willems is a genius when it comes to creating books that speak to both young and old and this newest addition to his writing collection is no exception. That Is Not a Good Idea! is filled with the loud silly humor that readers have come to expect from Willems, but also includes a new darker humor that readers of books like I Want My Hat Back and Creepy Carrots will enjoy as well. Take a walk with goose and fox into this noir style picture book while little goslings shout in hopes of preventing a rather dastardly surprise ending that will no doubt leave readers wanting to pick up That Is Not a Good Idea! again and again.

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 5 and up. A noir style picture book with a nod to Jon Klassen’s I Want My Hat Back that will have fans of this darker, but funny style of storytelling quite happy.
