October’s Read-to-Me Picture Book Challenge Link-Up

This is the place to come for the month of October to link-up any and all of your picture book reviews you’ve posted during the month!

First of all…Congratulations go to the winner from September!

Laurie at Keeping It Simple won with her fantastic post that included not only one, but four picture book reviews! She shared Grandma’s Chocolate by Mara Price, Who Stole Mona Lisa by Ruthie Knapp, The Great Serum Race, and Art & Max by David Wiesner. Not only does she share her thoughts on the books, but her kiddos as well; which of course I love! Make sure to stop by and wish her congratulations!
Congratulations again! Please make sure to email me some time this month so that I can get your books out to you!

The Details:

  • Make sure that before you link-up your reviews you’ve signed up for the challenge as outlined on the challenge page. (If you have not, I reserve the right to delete your entry.)
  • Anyone, even non-bloggers can participate. Open worldwide.
  • Non-bloggers can link to their reviews posted on Goodreads, Shelfari, LibraryThing, or Amazon. (If you need help with this please feel free to email me at the1stdaughter {at} gmail {dot} com.)
  • Link as many reviews as you’d like throughout the month. Each link to *review(s)* will enter you into the monthly prize drawing. (Only reviews will count toward the drawing, not just listings of what you are reading. Sorry! We want to hear what you thought about the books. <3)
  • Monthly prize drawing is open to all participants, worldwide, and one winner will be chosen at random and will be posted on the 2nd day of the month following (ie. November 2nd for this month). So please make sure to link any reviews you’d like counted for the month before the last day of the month (October 31, 2011).

What’s up for grabs this month for participants?

Over the River and Through the Wood: The New England Boy’s Song about Thanksgiving Day
by Lydia Maria Francis Child and Illustrated by Matt Tavares

Keeping with the holiday theme from last month I’m selecting a book by a wonderful author and more specifically an illustrator I absolutely adore. It’s wonderful to have such a gorgeous picture book in time for Thanksgiving, as there aren’t too many out there. (And I apologize to our non-US participants that are absolutely eligible to win but may not celebrate the holiday. Hopefully you’ll still love the beauty of this book!) This month I will be selecting two winners! Good luck all!

That’s it! Get linking and make sure to take a look around at the other reviews posted for more great ideas on what picture books to pick up next. I know I’m going to be stopping by just to add to our TBR pile!

**PS…As an added incentive, every 5 comments you make on your fellow participant’s picture book reviews you will get an additional entry into the monthly drawing. Before the last day of the month make sure to stop by leaving a comment about how many comments you have left so that I can add those to the amount you’ve entered in reviews! (And of course, make sure you are signed up to participate in the challenge!)**

(I should add, the INSPYs are more specifically about faith inspired literature.)

Book Dreaming and a Giveaway: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

Posted on Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 by the1stdaughter

Book Dreaming is just that. It’s a feature I’m going to use to highlight those books that make you dreamy or possibly just end up making you dream about them. It could be anything from newly released books to one’s that are already out that I can’t get out of my head to those I can’t seem to get my hands on soon enough!

Today’s Book Dreaming pick is A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. This is a book that I finished reading months ago and still have a hard time coming up with the words to articulate how I feel about it. Stunning, shocking, sad, honest, raw, and incredibly emotional would be only a few adjectives I could use to describe this most recent work by the brilliant Patrick Ness. Inspired by an idea of the great author Siobhan Dowd, Ness’ story is something that I believe readers will never forget once reading and will certainly add to their favorite read’s list. Today marks the release of the accompanying book trailer in anticipation of the book’s release and it’s gorgeous! Take a look…

At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting– he’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd– whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself– Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined.
An unflinching, darkly funny, and deeply moving story of a boy, his seriously ill mother, and an unexpected monstrous visitor.

Beautiful, don’t you think? It’s perfect for the book and the illustrations by Jim Kay that are expounded on are amazing as they come to life! This is certainly a book you don’t want to miss!
