Special Event: “Despicable Me” Book Review & Giveaway

Posted on Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 by the1stdaughter

Sleepy Kittens by Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio Illustrated by Eric Gillon

Published by Hachette Book Group (An imprint of Little Brown & Company)

Ages: 4-8

Pages: 10

Publishers Summary:
An adorable board book with finger puppets based on a book featured in the animated movie, Despicable Me, coming from Universal Studios in Summer 2010. With gentle, rhythmic verse, little ones will love to snuggle up with these soft, cozy kitties at bedtime.

Sleepy Kittens is exactly what the summary says, an adorable board book for little ones. There are little finger puppets attached to the top of the book that give you (and your little one) the chance to interact with the book. It’s a short and sweet little bedtime book about a mother kitty trying to coax her little kitties to bed for the night. She does everything from brushing their fur, giving them a drink and singing them a lullaby. All things I’m sure many of us can relate to at some point. Both Littlebug and Turkeybird are already enjoying this sweet book and I’m positive the little kitties will be a big hit in their upcoming movie debut, Despicable Me.”

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 1 and up. The perfect bedtime story for any little one, especially those with an affinity for kitties.

Our family is absolutely dying to go see it because not only does the story look amazing, but Steve Carrell is the voice of the main character, Gru. To start off today’s Arm Chair BEA excitement I thought I’d go with a my super secret extra amazing Giveaway! You have to promise not to tell anyone, but Arm Chair BEA Participants though! The Good Night, Sleep Tight Workbook by Kim West Review & Giveaway

Posted on Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 by the1stdaughter

The Good Night, Sleep Tight Workbook by Kim West

Published by Easton Studio Press

Pages:120

Summary: The perfect combination for guaranteed sleep success.

Good Night Sleep Tight Workbook is the essential companion to the best selling book, Good Night, Sleep Tight, by The Sleep Lady, Kim West. The workbook includes a step-by-step guide for parents, is organized by age and by process, and is the key to sleep coaching success. The Workbook includes an essential to do list, sleep plans, tear out sleep logs, sleep manner sticker charts, daily reminders and tips and a certificate of completion for celebrating success – all the essentials needed to help you achieve sleep success!

“This is by far the hardest thing for a new parent to struggle with – sleep or a lack there of in our case. As a parent of two little one’s with complete polar opposite sleep styles I can honestly say that you will pretty much take all the help you can get in whatever form it comes in. The Good Night, Sleep Tight Workbook is definitely one of those resources I would have turned to in the beginning weeks of my Turkeybird’s life. You struggle to make the decisions about whether to let them cry or to rock them to sleep; when to drop the pacifier and when the night feedings should start to taper off. It truly never ends, but there is help in sight!

“Now that I’ve mentioned the Turkeybird I should probably say this, he was a terrible sleeper-absolutely awful, but looking back I can’t entirely fault him. In The Good Night, Sleep Tight Workbook Kim West talks about how important consistency is in a child’s life and that without it you can almost guarantee poor sleeping habits. Well, this is a large part of the Turkeybird’s past problems. After he was born (at just 2 months old) we packed him and a small amount of our belongings into the car and drove across country to spend the summer in a temporary house while my husband worked at a new internship. Our place for two and a half months was a one bedroom home next to a very busy construction site and noisy neighbors upstairs; not exactly ideal circumstances. I wish I had had this book to know that I could have picked up a sound machine to block the noise, blacked out the windows to make sleeping more comfortable, or even just relaxed a bit. Fortunately he’s gotten much better since this experience, although I’m not sure how we all lived through it.

“As for Littlebug, so much the opposite! She was a great sleeper from the start, but I often wonder how much that had to do with me being more relaxed? I was even more willing to allow her to cry a bit when she fell asleep, not much, but enough to get her to realize she could do it on her own. It’s been like night and day between the two.

“The more relaxed stand point was what I liked so much about this book. I haven’t read any of her other books, but this one in particular I think is great especially for busy new moms. It’s workbook format makes planning and establishing a sleep routine that works for you and your family simple and easy to live with. There’s nothing wonderful about being told you need to just let your baby ‘cry it out’ for what seems like hours, especially when it’s your first, and I never agreed with that viewpoint; I still don’t. But Kim West does an excellent job of making this work for your family, using techniques that help you on an individual level without taking up too much time to study the materials.

“I’m definitely considering giving this workbook to a handful of my girlfriends with new babies on the way. There are guidelines for every stage of development, but they are reasonable enough that there are ways to work with what you know works best for your baby and family. In the stacks of baby books everyone reads this goes to the top of my list of must reads in preparation for baby and toddler-hood. Because even at his older age our sweet Turkeybird still has a few bumps in the road from time to time. A great resource for every family with little ones.”

A Place For Birds & A Place For Frogs by Melissa Stewart Review and Giveaway

Posted on Wednesday, May 12th, 2010 by the1stdaughter

A Place For Birds A Place For Frogs

A Place For Birds & A Place For Frogs by Melissa Stewart Illustrated by Higgins Bond Published by Peachtree Publishers

Pages: 32

Ages: 4-8

Publishers Summary for A Place For Frogs: In this simple introduction to frogs and ecology, Melissa Stewart shares with young readers the behavior and beauty of frogs and describes specific ways people can help protect them and their natural habitats.

Children learn basic facts about frogs, including where they live, what they eat, and how they benefit plants and other animals. Sidebars throughout the book contain information on how human action has harmed frogs and the many ways people can protect certain frog populations, such as by preserving wetlands and cutting down on pesticide use. Pointers on how youngsters can help frogs in their own neighborhood are also included.

Author Melissa Stewart offers children a glimpse into the interconnectedness of our world and shows how the actions of one species can inadvertently harm another. Illustrator Higgins Bond’s colorful, realistically detailed watercolor illustrations highlight the diversity of the species—from the northern leopard frog native to Minnesota ponds to the harlequin frog in the rainforests of Central America.

The Turkeybird Speaks: “Wow! Look at all the frogs! There are even snakes and birds and lizards! These books are amazing! The best part is that when we’d read them all, mom took me out to look for frogs and birds outside. I love being outside! We didn’t find any frogs, but we did see so many birds and even a few squirrels. We even picked up a frog for our fish tank here at home, he’s kind of funny though and just lives inside the water. He likes to swim a lot too.

“These books are so much fun! Especially if you can talk your mom and dad into going on a ‘nature hike’ to find all of neat animals in the books. I even learned a few things I didn’t know before. So neat! Great books for the kids in your life who love to learn and be outside.”

Illustration from A Place for Birds by Melissa Stewart

Mom’s Two Cents: “These beautiful and educational books are absolutely perfect for any home, school and/or library. Personally I think the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous, filled with detail in every inch and the text is perfect for little thinkers. Each page has illustrations, a little ‘story’ and an informational section. In this way it’s adaptable to even the smallest of readers up to the more advanced. There are even detailed images in the book of where each species of bird or frog is located in the world, making it even more interactive for older readers.

“Both, A Place for Birds & A Place for Frogs, are books I’m happy to have in our home library. Even Littlebug has begun to enjoy the illustrations and with time I know she will gain even more from the knowledge provided in these books. The Turkeybird is absolutely fascinated to read through the book and then step outside to see in real life those animals he only just read about. With children facing an increasing lack of outdoor play this is a book that gets them out and interacting with nature which adds so much to the overall experience within the book.

“Melissa Stewart’s passion for nature and conservation is evident in every page. As a family who constantly strives to do our best to help the environment in whatever way possible, this is a book I’m happy to continue sharing with my own children in an attempt to help them value the beauty found just out our back door and beyond.”

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 1 and up. Well suited for children and adults of any age with an interest in learning more about the world of nature around them.

For the Comments: Do you have a favorite outdoor spot or hobby that involves nature? Where or what is it? We’d love to know!

A Tree for Emmy by Mary Ann Rodman Illustrated by Tatjana Mai-Wyss Review & Giveaway

Posted on Monday, May 3rd, 2010 by the1stdaughter

A Tree for Emmy by Mary Ann Rodman Illustrated by Tatjana Mai-Wyss

Published by Peachtree Publishers

Pages: 32

Ages: 4-8

Publishers Summary: Emmy loves trees. She loves oak trees with acorns. She loves pine trees with cones, and willow trees with swishy branches. But best of all, Emmy loves the mimosa tree that grows in her grandmother’s pasture. Emmy swings on its branches, plays with its fuzzy pink blossoms, and rattles its seedpods like maracas.

But when Emmy decides she wants a mimosa tree of her own for her birthday, she is dismayed to find that many grown-ups do not share her enthusiasm. Garden stores only sell ornamental trees like plum or pear or tulip trees.

Emmy is crushed—until she discovers that the answer to her problem is growing right before her eyes!

“Emmy certainly is a stubborn little girl. I’m sure none of us know any of those, do we? She’s in love with a tree, but not just any tree, a Mimosa Tree. She swings and plays all around the one she’s fallen in love with at her grandmother’s home and now, for her birthday, she wants one of her own. She’s determined and won’t settle for any tree but her beloved Mimosa.

“In A Tree for Emmy you have the wonderful opportunity of learning about all types of trees. From Oak to Pine to Willows and even to all different varieties of fruit trees. And though it’s easy to get swept away in Emmy’s temper tantrums and demands you quickly learn the beauty of the book rests with it’s story of nature and trees. Children will love to learn from Emmy, all of the many trees available in the great outdoors.

“The story is told through the words of Mary Ann Rodman and the gorgeous illustrations of Tatjana Mai-Wyss. One of the most delightful parts of the book are the textures Mai-Wyss used in the illustrations, there are even some of Emmy’s dresses made of a crocheted yarn that’s duplicated on the page. Just beautiful.

“Overall, I loved this book. Emmy was a typical little girl as her grandmother referred to her, ‘stubborn and strong and a little bit wild’, but who of us as little girls wasn’t like this? Through her journey for just that one special Mimosa tree you discover a whole world of nature to take in and go out and devour. It’s one you will want to read with your little ones and then go out and tell them all the different tree types you know. And maybe, just maybe, plant a favorite for your little girl or boy.”

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 4 and up. From the illustrations to the story all will be delighted to run out and find their “favorite tree”.

For the Comments: Do you have a favorite tree? If so, what is it and why? (Mine’s definitely a Weeping Willow.)

Giveaway: Thanks to Peachtree Publishers I have one copy of this book to giveaway to one lucky follower of There’s A Book!

Details: You MUST fill out the form below, comments will not count as entries. Must be a follower of There’s A Book. Must be a US/Canadian resident. The giveaway will run from May 4, 2010 until May 21, 2010 midnight EST.

Arbor Day Square by Kathryn O. Galbraith Illustrated by Cyd Moore Review and Giveaway

Posted on Friday, April 30th, 2010 by the1stdaughter

arbordaysquareArbor Day Square by Kathryn O. Galbraith Illustrated by Cyd Moore

Published by Peachtree Publishers

Pages: 32

Ages: 4-8

Publishers Summary: Katie and her papa are among a group of settlers building a town in the middle of the dusty, brown prairie. Every week the trains bring more people and more lumber to build houses, fences, and barns. New buildings are erected: a church with a steeple, a store with glass windows, even a schoolhouse with desks for seventeen children.

But one thing is missing: trees.

When the townspeople take up a collection to order trees from back east Katie adds her own pennies and Papa’s silver dollar. When the tiny saplings finally arrive, Katie helps dig holes and fetch water. Then, in a quiet corner off the public square, Katie and Papa plant a flowering dogwood in memory of Mama.

Hands

“In honor of Arbor Day and courtesy of Peachtree Publishers I thought what better way to celebrate than to review and giveaway a book all about this special day. Arbor Day was initially founded in 1872 and is currently celebrated all over the world with it’s intent being to plant and care for trees everywhere. As our world continues to grow and expand industrially there is more of a need for this than ever, which is another reason we also celebrate Earth Day earlier in this month. Although, in Arbor Day Square they have an entirely different reason for planting and caring for trees…

“In Arbor Day Square Katie and her ‘Papa’ have recently moved to a booming new town in the West. It’s definitely the ‘wild wild west’ I remember from my youth while watching old westerns with my dad. There is practically nothing and any supplies they need are brought in by train from the East. Can you even imagine? To have a beautiful clean slate to work with…and that’s exactly how Katie’s dad see’s it, a beautiful canvas to bring to life.

“Over time the town is able to pool their resources to fund the beginnings of a beautiful town square and start a tradition that carries on for years to come. The beginnings of their town’s very own Arbor Day. And by so doing they transform their new home into a beautiful place to enjoy and relax in.

“A beautiful book. In fact, that was about all my sweet Littlebug and Turkeybird were interested in now, the illustrations. I think they may be a little young too understand all of the words, but as I explained to them in ways they could understand you could see their faces light up.  Arbor Day Square is a wonderful book, full of beautiful art and the perfect story. I’m truly looking forward to continuing to share this with my little one’s as they grow older to help them understand the meaning behind this very important holiday.”

The1stdaughter Recommends: Ages 3 and up. Parents and children alike will love this book. Though with younger children they may need a little explaining, it’s never to young to start teaching a child about taking care of the earth.

For the Comments: Do you celebrate Arbor Day or Earth Day? How?

Peachtree Publishers has graciously offered a copy of Arbor Day Square to one of our lucky readers. The giveaway is open until May 15th, 2010 and to US/Canadian residents only. Please make sure to fill out the form below to enter.
