A Bit of Me(Me) – The Best of Us

Posted on Saturday, July 30th, 2011 by the1stdaughter

We all leave our “footprint” on the world, in one way or another. We each, individually, do something or are someone that makes the world a little better just by being here. I created this weekly meme to get to know the blogging community I love just a bit better. To know what makes them tick, outside of books, that is. Each week I will post a question to be answered in the following week’s “A Bit of Me(Me)”. Check back each Saturday to get the info for next week’s post and link up with your current post right here.

I know, some of you are skeptical about putting yourself out there on the internet and I completely respect that. That’s the entire reason I have no desire to ever reveal the “real” names of The Turkeybird and Littlebug. In time, once they’re old enough, if they chose to do that on their own I will respect their decision. So, if ever during the time I’m doing this meme do you feel the question is just too personal for your liking, feel free to post something else, I never want anyone to feel uncomfortable with what they share and I promise it will always be “kid-friendly”. I mean, this is a primarily children’s and young adult site, you know?

So, let’s get started!

This Weeks Question: Who is the person you admire the very most?

This is such a tough question. There are so many people in my life that I’ve looked up to and learned so much from. It’s more of a question of couldn’t I morph them all into one big bucket and that would be my one person? There are things I’ve taken from each that have changed me and made me the person I am today.

So, instead of focusing on a family member, I’m going to pick a friend of mine who recently passed away. Elizabeth was 92 when she passed away just a few weeks ago and up until that time she was constantly on the go. I’ve never seen someone so enthusiastic and fervent about life as she was. Not only that, but Elizabeth was one of the most positive people I’ve ever known. During a time in my life when I was feeling extremely alone and struggling with making friends she made me feel like I was the most wonderful person in the world with a few simple words. She was kind, giving and understanding. It’s all of these qualities and more that I look up to and hope that I one day I’m able to be even just a little bit like her.

Now, your turn! Link up below and tell everyone “A Bit of You!”

Next Week’s Question: At this very moment, which song makes your toes tap?
Have a question to add? I’d love some suggestions! Just leave them in the comments and I’ll see about adding them in as we go!

Also, feel free to grab either of the buttons for your own “A Bit of Me(Me)” post (or create your own), but make sure to link back to There’s A Book. (You can also resize these down to a smaller size if you’d like.)

A Bit of Me(Me) – Sleepy Saturdays

This Weeks Question: What’s your favorite weekend activity?

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit this is exactly where I’d rather be most of the early half of Saturday:

(Not my bed, just one I adore!)

Yep, I’m definitely Saturday morning sleeping in kind of gal. Unfortunately, I have two little kiddos who happen to be early risers but…I also have a fabulous husband who usually lets me sleep in until around 8 every Saturday morning. It’s lovely! I know, some of you are saying, “8am? That’s not sleeping in!” Well, it’s definitely later than the rest of the week and I’ll take what I can get at this point.

A Bit of Me(Me) – Out on the Ocean

This Weeks Question: If you were going to be stuck on a deserted island, which 5 books, movies, people and foods would you take along?

First of all, sorry about the delay today! I’m trying frantically to get ready for a trip to Canada over the next 3 weeks and that includes setting up scheduled posts. It’s crazy! Also, just as a side note because of the trip I probably won’t be commenting much for the next couple of weeks after this week. That’s not because I don’t want to, but because I won’t even have access to a computer! Wow! It’s going to be fun, but I may go into withdrawals! LOL

Okay, onto today’s topic! Five things…well, since this is my question I’m setting the stage a bit. The first thing I’d want on the deserted island is a luxury cabana stoked to the hilt with food and necessities. This way I don’t have to worry about any of that nasty survival/camping type stuff I’m not extremely fond of.

As for the other four people and items I’d first have to absolutely bring my hubby. There’s no way I’d go to a deserted island without my best friend and my hubby would probably be a bit upset if I left him behind with the kiddos. haha!

For the last three, I’d pick the following in no particular order…

  • My Nook packed full of my favorite books.
  • My iPhone so that I could check on the kiddos from time to time.
  • A return trip ticket, because there’s no way I could stay away from my kiddos for too long. :)

A Bit of Me(Me) – In the Kitchen

This Weeks Question: Are you fond of cooking?

This is a bit of a funny question. Well, yes, I am fond of cooking, but not so much with little ones at the moment. I guess I should say with really little ones. Turkeybird does pretty well now with helping out in the kitchen, especially when you give him a task to complete and then he’s fantastic! Littlebug on the other hand, lets just say she’s going through a very “independent” stage and has an OCD momma who goes crazy with food all over the kitchen. So, hopefully this won’t last long and we can get back to cooking more soon, because I do really enjoy it. Of course my hubby might disagree with me since he’s really The Baker in the house, but that’s okay…he can make some fabulous desserts!

Part of the reason I’ve enjoyed cooking in the past has a lot to do with my own parents. My dad has long been the “chef” in our house and my mom the “baker”. In fact my mom was the one who made our wedding cake and so it stands to reason that I’d like being in the kitchen even a little bit. When I do get time to cook I love things like fish tacos with home-made tortillas, chicken tetrazzini, enchiladas, cream cheese croissants and more. Hopefully one day soon I can figure out how to make all these not-so-healthy but really tasty dishes a bit more healthy and keep on cooking!

A Bit of Me(Me) – Live in the Moment

So, let’s get started!

This Weeks Question: Name one (or two or three) things you miss about being a child.

This is actually a little harder than I thought it would be. I wasn’t exactly what you’d deem a “happy child”. It wasn’t so much that I had a miserable childhood or came from a broken home, because I absolutely didn’t. I have wonderful parents and two siblings who, minus the normal sibling rivalry, were the best sisters a girl could hope for. My beef with being a child has everything to do with wanting more.

Yes, I am/was a “the grass is greener on the other side” kind of gal. I was constantly hoping to be taller or even just tall enough to open the cupboards myself without climbing. I wanted to forgo school and the mind-numbing subjects I had “forced” upon me so that I could focus on my music. Looking back now I can see how terribly wrong I was and how I wished I had lived in the moment.

So, for me, what I miss most about being a child…is just being a child. I wish I would have appreciated the freedom more, the time to roam and discover. As I see my children growing up before my eyes I can only hope that I encourage them to live the life they have in the moment each and every day. Let’s hope I do, even just a little bit. Though I think my message sometimes may be something more along these lines (just kidding)…

A Bit of Me(Me) – In the Middle

So, let’s get started!

This Weeks Question: Were you considered popular in high school? Why or why not? If not, which crowd did you “roll” with?

This in a way is a simple question for me, because I was absolutely not with any crowd for sure while growing up and I certainly wasn’t what you’d consider “popular”. Although, during high school, if I had to pick a specific group, I’d definitely put myself in the “band-geeks” or “choir-nerds” crowd.

Though I tended to be friendly with nearly everyone that crossed my path and pretty much knew the majority of the kids in my 500 person graduating class, I always gravitated toward my passions…music. You could often find me in either the band or choir rooms playing my flute or singing, but I also made frequent stops in the theater department as well at the swimming pool for swim practice. Looking back, even though I struggled with my high school years, they were still some of the most fun times growing up and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.
