It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? (20)

Posted on Sunday, June 20th, 2010 by the1stdaughter

This fabulous weekly recap is hosted by Shelia of One Persons Journey Through a World of Books. Each week we recap what we’ve read and look at what’s coming up this week. If you’re interested head over to Shelia’s site and get involved! It’s a blast and I may even stop by to see what you’re up to!

Here’s what we’ve been up to this week:

Another busy week here at There’s A Book! Quite a few reviews and if I have to pick just one for you to look at it would absolutely be The Secret Lives of Princesses, one of my favorite books of the year (even for adults!). I was also able to get most of my links added to my “Links” page, make sure to let me know if I missed you, it wasn’t intentional, I promise!

I was also able to go to lunch on Saturday with one of my favorite book bloggers, Jill from Fizzy Thoughts! We are actually going to start up a monthly get together now that we know we have another friend nearby as well, Gwen from Chew & Digest Books. It should be a blast and I can’t wait!

Besides that, we’ve had a house of sick kiddos, but slowly they’re getting back on their feet…just in time to go to grandma’s for the weekend for a family reunion of sorts. That’s what’s happening here, how about where you are?

A Bit of Me(Me) – Animals?

Posted on Friday, June 18th, 2010 by the1stdaughter

We all leave our “footprint” on the world, in one way or another. We each, individually, do something or are someone that makes the world a little better just by being here. I created this weekly meme to get to know the blogging community I love just a bit better. To know what makes them tick, outside of books, that is. Each week I will post a question to be answered in the following week’s “A Bit of Me(Me)”. Check back each Saturday to get the info for next week’s post and link up with your current post right here.

I know, some of you are skeptical about putting yourself out there on the internet and I completely respect that. That’s the entire reason I have no desire to ever reveal the “real” names of The Turkeybird and Littlebug. In time, once they’re old enough, if they chose to do that on their own I will respect their decision. So, if ever during the time I’m doing this meme do you feel the question is just too personal for your liking, feel free to post something else, I never want anyone to feel uncomfortable with what they share and I promise it will always be “kid-friendly”. I mean, this is a primarily children’s and young adult site, you know?

So, let’s get started!

This Weeks Question: Are you an animal person? Any type in particular?

Okay, I know, you’re saying, “What the heck? That’s not an animal!” Well, for those of you lucky enough to have tasted the amazing-ness that is In-N-Out Burger, you know what this is. “Animal Style Fries” Perfect for anyone looking to clog the arteries in moments and ward of lingering ex-boyfriends you want to drive away. Yep, loaded with their secret sauce, cheese and grilled onions these are a definite “animal style” meal that I’ve actually only ever seen my sister and her hubby enjoy.

So, on to the “Real” question. Am I an animal person? Well…absolutely! Growing up we had multiple cats and even a sweet little bird named “Puff Puff” (because he would literally puff up like a mini ball of feathers often). Currently though, no pets, well, we do have a few fish.

Littlebug would love nothing more than to have a “d-doggie” and the Turkeybird is a definite cat guy. What we would love…is to move into our own home, with a huge yard so that we could get one of these big guys:

Yep, we would love to have  a Great Dane and possibly a couple kitties. But until we are in our own home with room to run that’s probably not going to happen. Until then though, we do have a fabulous “stand-in” when we get to see him. My sister has a wonderful not-so-little English Bulldog named Ozzy. He’s fabulous! The last time we saw him my hubby nearly brought him home with us he likes him so much! Take a look, isn’t he adorable?!

PS…my sis is a fabulous photographer if you live in the Las Vegas or San Diego areas!

Now, your turn! Link up below and tell everyone “A Bit of You!”

Next Week’s Question: What is your favorite word and why?
Have a question to add? I’d love some suggestions! Just leave them in the comments and I’ll see about adding them in as we go!

Also, feel free to grab either of the buttons for your own “A Bit of Me(Me)” post (or create your own), but make sure to link back to There’s A Book. (You can also resize these down to a smaller size if you’d like.)

Here’s what we’ve been up to this week:

This week has been another rip roaring crazy week here. Bloggiesta was this weekend and I was lucky enough to step in at the last minute for a Mini-Challenge all about figuring out your stats. It was really fun and I think I was able to help a lot of other bloggers out there! Besides that, I’ve been reading like crazy and running after kiddos constantly. I even managed to throw out my back mid-week at the park (Littlebug is getting a bit big to haul up the top of a slide, but not big enough to get up there herself). I’ve also been busy with Gina from Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers putting together a book event of Epic proportions! You will definitely want to check out the Got Books? event, it’s going to be fabulous!

New Event!!!

Also, I just wanted to mention one more time that I’ve started a new Meme here at There’s A Book! It’s called A Bit of Me(Me) and it runs every Saturday. After participating in Armchair BEA and getting to know a little bit more about some of the fabulous bloggers out there I wanted to take the opportunity to do a little more “meeting and greeting”. I also wanted something on the weekends that was a little more relaxing. This week’s participants were fabulous and I can’t wait for more to jump on board. So, take a look and try it out! I can’t wait to get to know everyone a little better!

A Bit of Me(Me) – Movies

I mean, this is a primarily children’s and young adult site, you know?

So, let’s get started!

This Weeks Question: Tell us all about your favorite movie and why. Can’t pick one? Give us your top five!

This may shock you all, but my #1 Favorite movie would have to be, without any doubt:

The Lord of the Rings, Return of the King

Yes, I pretty much like all the others in the triology, but this one is by far my favorite. Not long after they were released to DVD I made my hubby sit and watch all three over and over again until I pretty much had it all memorized. We even watched every single minute of each of the extra features disks. Sadly though, I have never been able to make it through the books. One day though, if for no other reason than that they were my Uncle’s favorite books when he was alive.

If I was going to pick a runner up, a more “girlie” movie, it would definitely be An Ideal Husband based on the play by Oscar Wilde starring Rupert Everett. This was actually introduced to me by my husband while he was taking a literature class in college that discussed the play and movie. I absolutely adore Oscar Wilde’s work and so when I watched the movie version of An Ideal Husband I fell in love. It’s brilliant! Funny, romantic and has fantastic actors. You don’t want to miss it!

You can’t go wrong with either of these picks!

Now, your turn! Link up below and tell everyone “A Bit of You!”

Next Week’s Question: Are you an animal person? Any type in particular?
Have a question to add? I’d love some suggestions! Just leave them in the comments and I’ll see about adding them in as we go!

Here’s what we’ve been up to this week:

This week has been pretty relaxed, with the exception of reading of course! On Friday The Baker (my hubby) was sworn in as an attorney here in the state of California, which was actually a pretty neat experience. We went to the local courthouse and met with the Supreme Court Judge who talked to us a bit and then he was sworn in. It was a fantastic ending and beginning. We are absolutely excited to see what happens next!

New Event!!!

Also, I just wanted to let everyone know that I’ve started a new Meme here at There’s A Book! It’s called A Bit of Me(Me) and it runs every Saturday. A Bit of Me(Me) – Seasons

Posted on Friday, June 4th, 2010 by the1stdaughter

I mean, this is a primarily children’s and young adult site, you know?

So, let’s get started!

This Weeks Question: Spring is here and summer is upon us. Tell us a bit about your favorite season and why.

Mine, Spring!

It’s definitely still a bit of a tie between Spring and Fall, but Spring wins out because of Easter candy (love it!). What I love about both seasons are the colors. This is also a point of some sadness for me, because as many of you know California doesn’t do much color changing throughout the year. But when we lived in both Utah and then Virginia I absolutely fell in love with the colors. It’s hard not be taken aback when you round a corner to discover a tree overflowing with shades of red and yellows or the bloom of cherry blossoms after a nice Spring rain. There’s something about the dramatic beauty that brings awe and peace to my soul. I’m definitely looking forward to future trips back East to enjoy the canvas of colors it has to offer.

Now, your turn! Link up below and tell everyone “A Bit of You!”

Next Week’s Question: Tell us all about your favorite movie and why. Can’t pick one? Give us your top five!

Here’s what we’ve been up to this week:

Okay, so, the week before was relaxing, this week…not so much. It was mass craziness here, but so completely worth it with how the Armchair BEA event turned out. We ended up having more than 170 participants and more posts than I have been able to get to in their entirety just yet. I have a feeling I’m going to be doing A LOT of blog reading and catching up this week, but I’m definitely looking forward to it! Also, this may be why you see a bit of repetitiveness in my reading/reviewing from last week to this, it took up most of my time, so this week is back to the grind. How about you?

New Event!!!

A Bit of Me(Me) – The Beginning

Posted on Saturday, May 29th, 2010 by the1stdaughter

We all leave our “footprint” on the world, in one way or another. We each, individually, do something or are someone that makes the world a little better just by being here. I created this weekly meme to get to know the blogging community I love just a bit better. To know what makes them tick, outside of books, that is. Each week I will post a question to be answered in the following week’s “A Bit of Me(Me)”. Check back each Saturday to get the info for next week’s post and link up with your current post right here.

The Inspiration: As quite a few of you know, I was able to help out with the recent Arm Chair BEA event (I’ll have a wrap up tomorrow!) and one of the most enjoyable parts of the event was getting to know the other bloggers I talk to so often. Yes, some were new and some I had talked to since the beginnings of my blog were in process, but all had/have so much to share. The other reason for kick starting this was primarily because I wanted to connect better with everyone reading There’s A Book. My first “A Bit of Me” post was just last week and it was actually quite liberating to share a little bit about what makes me tick as a person, in real life.

This week, I’m sharing my favorite picture of me and the story behind it.
If you’d rather not share a picture of you, share your favorite picture and tell us why.

This picture was taken when I was still pregnant with my sweet Littlebug. During my pregnancy with The Turkeybird I was terribly terribly ill and spent most of my 9 months in bed. But with Bug I was up and running around until the very night before I had her. It was wonderful, well, not entirely, but by comparison it was great!

Part of the reason I love this picture so much, besides the fact that it’s one of the only pictures I’ve ever had taken that I can actually look at without nitpicking to death, is who took the picture. My friend Abbie, who was featured on There’s A Book just a few weeks ago, is one of my favorite people ever. Besides being a fantastic photographer, Abbie is my dearest “real-life” friend. She’s the person I pick up the phone for no matter where I am and call when I’m stressed, sad or just need an ear to hear me. We found each other while our husbands were both attending law school in Virginia and ever since we parted I feel like part of my heart is on the other side of the country. She’s an amazing friend and I’m lucky to have met her when I did.

Now, your turn! Link up below and tell everyone “A Bit of You!”

Next Week’s Question: Spring is here and summer is upon us. Tell us a bit out your favorite season and why.
Have a question to add? I’d love some suggestions! Just leave them in the comments and I’ll see about adding them in as we go!

Also, feel free to grab either of the buttons for your own “A Bit of Me(Me)” post (or create your own), but make sure to link back to There’s A Book.

Here’s what we’ve been up to this week:

An absolutely amazing week here in the There’s A Book home! The Baker found out that on Friday night (May 14, 2010) he officially passed the CA State Bar and I can’t stop pinching myself!!! So excuse my excessive discussion of this point on the blog, as this will hopefully be the last of it. We are just so so excited!

Other than that bit of very exciting news, it’s been a Children’s Book Week everywhere and There’s A Book is no exception. We’ve reviewed, shared and wish-listed some of our absolute favorites. I’m sure this won’t be the last of these great reviews and such, but it will definitely be more balanced as we go forward with more Middle Grade & Young Adult Reviews to come.
